National Disability Registration Drive Launched
The Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors announced the launch of Bermuda’s First National Disability Register with a registration drive held for all persons with disabilities and care providers.
A Government spokesperson said, “All are invited to attend the City Hall Lawn tomorrow Wednesday, 24 April, 2024 from 11 am to 4 pm. Media members are invited to a press conference starting promptly at 11 am.
“The National Disability Register will be created using digital technology to collect data with the assistance of Ministry staff set up on-site to help with the registration process. Interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing will also be available to support those wishing to register.”
The Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, Tinee Furbert, encouraged caregivers and those with a disability to register, stating, “Persons with disability are more likely to be impacted by society inequalities. Through our first-ever National Disability Register, the ministry will keep a centralized database of the types of disabilities persons are challenged with to help assess the gaps in the demand for services and special equipment. This aims to ensure no one is left behind.”
“New, in-depth data collected by the registry will guide policy in healthcare, education, and accessibility initiatives to facilitate targeted support and deliver appropriate resources to advance inclusivity in Bermuda.”
The spokesperson said, “The Ministry sought support from the United Nations Development Programme office located in Jamaica where representatives gave input into a needs assessment for the development of an App. The Office also provided financial support for the development of the project.
“Various Government departments, community organizations, and support agencies will be operating pop-up stalls at City Hall grounds to offer information for persons with disabilities.”
Minister Furbert concluded, “I encourage all to attend the event on Wednesday to be part of this significant milestone and to learn more about the National Disability Registry, including the existing programs available to support persons with disabilities.”
Great work. These are things that happening that don’t not impact the majority but make a big difference to a minority.
