Local dance teacher Angie Hubbard will host a dance convention at the Bermuda High School for Girls on Sunday [April 28].

The free event, which coincides with International Dance Day, offers classes for children aged 8 to 11 and 12 and above in ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop and musical theatre from 9.15 am to 3 pm.

There is an option for full or half-day participation.

Ms Hubbard, who works at the Jackson’s School of Performing Arts in Hamilton, has enlisted the help of some of the island’s top dance teachers, including Nikia Manders, Heather Shrubb, Barbara Frith, Alexis Smith, Sacha Dill, Taye-Zino Trott and Brittany Adams.

Ms Hubbard, who hails from Pittsburgh and is married to a Bermudian, said she expects more than 50 children to participate in the convention and hopes it can become an annual event.

Having previously lived on the island for around 20 years before returning in 2021, Ms Hubbard wants to create more opportunities for aspiring young dancers in Bermuda.

“When I returned to Bermuda, I noticed lots things offered to local dancers had diminished over the past 20 years, maybe because of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Ms Hubbard told Bernews.

“We used to have the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts that brought in a lot of dance companies, and the National Dance Foundation of Bermuda did a bunch of stuff.

“This is a great way to give back to the local dance community. I’m running it the same as if we were having a dance convention in the United States.”

Ms Hubbard, who also runs a company called Three Little Lotus, teaching Pilates, dance and personal training, said she hopes to bring some of the island’s top dancers overseas to deliver masterclass sessions at future events.
