Budding actors from Paget Primary School will bring life to the classic musical The Wiz as part of a fundraiser for their music and arts programmes.

Students will perform the Broadway musical – a reimagined story of the iconic Wizard of Oz – at the school on May 10 and 11.

They will also showcase their adaptation of The Wiz at The Spring into the Arts Festival, run by the Department of Education, at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium at CedarBridge Academy on May 30.

Shani Smith, a music teacher at Paget Primary, said the cast watched the 1978 film of the same name, starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, to help inspire them before their performances.

“Some of the children weren’t familiar with the story, so I showed them the film to get acquainted with it,” she told Bernews.

Ms Smith has helped run a rehearsal camp this week at the school for the cast as they step up preparations for opening night.

“Some days I’m anxious, some days I’m super excited, and some days I’m like, ‘Oh man, am I doing enough!’” she said.

“The camp has been great in helping with the children’s performances. I haven’t had to worry about pulling them out of class or working around the other subjects. I’ve had them all to myself.”

Savannah Lee, who will play Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, admits she expects to have a few nerves jangling on opening night.

“I wanted to be one of the main characters, and I’m happy to be playing Evillene,” the eight-year-old said.

“I am scared about a hundred people sitting in the audience and looking at me. It’s also kind of fun, though, being in the spotlight!

“I’ve been practising at home to make sure I’m ready for the shows.”

K’ah Seymour, 10, said she was over the moon to have won the lead role of Dorothy.

“I was up against people older than me and thought, ‘Maybe I’ll end up being an understudy or get a different part,’” she said.

“I don’t feel too nervous. Once the first line is out of the way my nerves will disappear. I’m looking to have some fun with it!”

Tickets will be available at Bdatix.bm.
