The United States SailGP Team has appointed Evan Aras as interim head coach, taking over from Mark Ivey, and  Aras will make his coaching debut in Bermuda at the Apex Bermuda Sail Grand Prix, May 4 – 5.

A spokesperson said, “Aras is a former two-time national champion at Georgetown University. He coached Team USA’s 49er team at the 2016 Olympic Games and more recently coached the American women to qualify for Paris 2024 in the 49erFX.”

“We have an incredible opportunity in front of us as the newest team in the league,” said Aras. “Having known many of the U.S. SailGP Team athletes for years, I know firsthand the caliber of talent and personalities – and determination to succeed – we have on this team.”

“I’ve long respected Evan as a sailor and a talented coach,” said Mike Buckley, U.S. SailGP Team co-owner and CEO. “His analytical mindset and coaching style will benefit our team as we focus on the final four races of the Season. He is hungry to prove himself on the biggest stage, and I am confident he will fit right in.

“I would like to thank Mark for his dedication and commitment these last few months. Coaching to a P3 in only the second grand prix for our team was an exceptional accomplishment,” Buckley continued. “Mark will always be part of our team in one way or another, and I wish him and his beautiful family all the best moving forward.”

Ivey made the decision to step back from the team earlier this month after four events, where he helped lay a foundation for the new team. “This is an incredibly talented group of athletes and I fully expect to see them consistently on the podium in the coming seasons,” said Ivey. “I look forward to watching this team grow, and I am proud to have played a role during the early days.”
