The Department of Child & Family Services hosted its annual appreciation tea, celebrating Bermuda’s foster parents on Sunday [May 5].

A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Child & Family Services [DCFS] gathered to honour Bermuda’s foster parents at the annual Appreciation Tea on Sunday, May 5th, 2024. This event, marking the beginning of Foster Care Month, recognises the tireless efforts and dedication of foster parents who provide nurturing homes for children in need.

“The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinée Furbert, JP, MP, expressed gratitude towards Bermuda’s foster families, acknowledging their significant sacrifices and compassionate commitment. “Bermuda’s Foster Parents are exceptional; you are Bermuda’s unsung heroes and we thank you for answering the call,” said Minister Furbert. “I also want to give heartfelt thanks to foster families who have taken in sibling groups, thereby keeping the sibling relationship intact.”

“The event also highlighted the vital role of respite care providers, who offer additional support to foster families, contributing to the well-being of children in care. “Respite care providers are instrumental in forming relationships with the children and providing that added layer of support to the foster families,” said Minister Furbert.

“This year’s Appreciation Tea featured guest speaker Lashuntae Dill-Assing, a former foster child who overcame adversity to graduate from Delaware State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Lashuntae shared her inspiring journey and emphasised the importance of forgiveness and perseverance. She was also honored as the recipient of “The Glenda Edwards Scholarship” by the Foster Parent Association.

“Among the honorees at the event were Lindsay Simmons, Foster Parent of the Year, Selena Simons, Social Worker of the Year, Simone Romaine, Social Worker of the Year [Runner Up], and Anthony and Susan Richardson, for their outstanding dedication to foster parenting. Additionally, Irene Francis was celebrated for her remarkable 20-year tenure in fostering upon her retirement.

“Reflecting on the event, Mrs. Selena Simons, Foster Care Coordinator at DCFS and Social Worker of the Year, said, “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to every foster parent and respite caregiver for their role in supporting Bermuda’s Foster Care Programme. Your dedication and love make a lasting impact on the lives of children in our community.”
