Jason North, the Bermuda Karting Association president, says the local karting scene is “steadily growing” after an exciting and competitive Rubis National Championship season at the Southside Raceway in St David’s.

More than 50 drivers competed in 63 karts in eight classes, with North, who won the L206 Senior Class, believing the Association is riding a wave of increased popularity.

“We’ve been steadily growing over the past five or six years,” North told Bernews.

“Despite Covid slowing us down a little bit, we’ve continued to gain traction and new members. We’ve already had some interest from new drivers for next year.”

The BKA’s members recently agreed for it to change its name from the Bermuda Karting Club after being granted national sports governing body status.

North admits there was some pushback regarding the name change but insists its “history is preserved” and said there are clear benefits to becoming a national sports governing body.

“[Becoming an Association] means we’re the umbrella for all karting activity in Bermuda,” North said.

“We can apply for funding and grants, nominate athletes for the Annual Sports Awards, and receive help in structuring.

“There was some pushback changing our name from club to association, but it doesn’t change anything.

“We’d been called the BKC for almost 50 years; to some members, we will always be the BKC. Our history is preserved.

“We’re a well-organised, well-oiled machine and have been ever since I can remember.

“Our Southside track is Government leased, so we want to work with them and evolve the Association.”

The BKA will hold its annual award presentation at Café Lido at Elbow Beach on Friday [May 31].
