Nikki Bascome Reflects On Points Victory

Boxer Nikki Bascome says he has more fights left in the tank after his unanimous points win over American Rashad Kilpatrick in the co-main event at The Shed in Dockyard on Saturday [May 25].
Bascome improved his professional record to 13 wins from 14 bouts after a controlled display in his eight-round welterweight contest against southpaw Kilpatrick [7-3-0].
Although Bascome was satisfied with his performance, he believes he did not produce his best form, which he puts down to a lack of sparring against southpaw opponents during his camp.
“I’m my biggest critic and felt I was off a little bit,” Bascome told Bernews. “I felt I controlled most of the fight, although I probably gave away a few rounds.
“I had a lot of sparring but didn’t have much southpaw sparring and felt my timing was a little off.
“When I fought [Alvin] Lagumbay [in May last year], I had plenty of southpaw sparring.”
The 33-year-old described Kilpatrick as a tricky customer who used his natural physical gifts to his advantage.
“He was a top competitor,” Bascome said. “He used his height well; he was long, and I had to work my way in.
“I tried to stick to my game plan and hurt him a few times.”
Bascome, who also coaches at the Fresh & Hungry Boxing Club in Warwick, said he is open to another fight before the end of the year.
“If I could get back in the ring later this year, that would be good,” he said. “I’d like to keep the ball rolling.
“I’m not thinking about packing [boxing] in yet. I’m taking it one fight at a time and I’m happy with the win.”
Bascome recently visited Elliot Primary School in Devonshire to deliver a motivational talk about his life and boxing career to students.
“Mr Bascome spoke about overcoming adversities, maintaining a positive outlook on life, and forging your own path to success,” the school wrote on Instagram.
“He also emphasised the importance of listening to your teachers, as they can be a significant influence on your life.”
