Tyler Christopher On Upcoming Fight In UK

Boxer Tyler Christopher must “box clever” when he returns to action after a six-month injury lay-off against Cameroonian Serge Ambomo in Birmingham, England, on Saturday [May 18].
That is the view of his coach, Anthony Hull, who will be in the Bermudian’s corner when he faces journeyman Ambomo in a six-round super-welterweight bout.
Although Christopher has not fought since his points win over Connor Meanwell in Birmingham in October last year, during which he fractured his left hand, Hull believes the southpaw will have too many tools in his box of tricks for his opponent.
“[Ambomo] doesn’t have many attributes, but he’s really strong,” Hull told Bernews.
“He will come to fight, but we don’t want to get into that – Tyler needs to box clever because his IQ is far superior.”
Hull, the head coach at the D&A Boxing School of Excellence in Stirchley, said he has focused on sharpening Christopher’s basic skills and technique in preparation for 37-year-old Ambomo, who has won 13 of his 76 contests.
“We’ve been focusing keeping it long, staying safe, and holding when he needs to hold,” he said.
“It’s been a different type of camp, but we know what to expect, and the fitness is there.
“We’re not looking for Tyler to throw the big bombs, looking for the knockout; we want to score the points and get the win.”
Christopher said he is confident of improving his perfect record of eight successive wins before “moving on to bigger and better things,” including a potential televised fight in the not-too-distant future.
“I’m confident I’ll have too much skill for Ambomo,” Christopher said. “He’s shorter than me and likes to fight inside and throw wild, heavy shots.
“I’ve been working on my straight punches and dealing with him on the outside.
“I’m looking to get on TV this year. I’ve spoken to my manager [Jon Pegg], who has introduced me to some matchmakers from Sky TV.
“Hopefully, they will keep me in mind if they need someone for welterweight or super-welterweight fights.”
The 27-year-old, who moved to Birmingham four-and-a-half years ago to pursue a pro boxing career, added: “I’m focused and not looking past Ambomo. I’m determined to get my ninth win.”
