65th Anniversary Of Theatre Boycott
There will be a celebration on Wednesday [July 3] marking the 65th Anniversary of the success of the Theatre Boycott.
A spokesperson said, “This coming Wednesday, July 3rd , at Harbour Nights, starting at 7 pm, there will be a Celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Success of the Theatre Boycott. This event is a collaboration involving the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce- the conveners of Harbour Nights – Imagine Bermuda and local personalities who are cognisant on whose shoulders we all stand. At the Flag-pole, the community is invited to join in a family-friendly, entertaining expression of appreciation to the Progressive Group and the many ordinary people who together in the Summer of 1959, brought about that transformative shift, which led to a significantly better Bermuda.
“The theme of this Celebration is “We are Family”; affirming the intrinsic value of every member of society – locally and globally. This theme recognizes that all of our lives are interrelated… what affects one, indirectly affects all.
“Some light of inspiration passed forward from the meaningful activism of the mid-40’s, eventually motivated those campaigners in June of 1959; and their collective action shifted the momentum of the paradigm of that era. A social construct geared to justify injustice and divide one from the other, was – to an extent – sent into retreat.
“However, a review of any media on what is currently happening globally, points to something of a resurgence of that much gloomier ethos.
“Affirming that “We Are Family” reminds us, that what we express gratitude about, ‘grows’. Appreciating the example of agency demonstrated by the many who collaborated in 1959; leverages today’s community efforts, as we pursue a better Future for Bermuda.
“Those collaborating in this July 3rd Celebration include Patrina O’Connor-Paynter and Ed Christopher serving as co-hosts. The presentations, geared to foster engagement by those attending, will include those by: “Live-Wire”, ‘In Motion Dancers’; Spoken-Word by Bobby-King- Somner; the Gombey Warriors & the musical group Hind Sight.”
