‘The Best Interviews The Best’ Series To Launch

July 15, 2024 | 0 Comments

This summer, ten of Bermuda’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes will represent the island on the biggest sporting stage in Paris, and as part of Bernews special coverage leading up to the Games, we are launching a video series highlighting each one of the athletes.

Top Athletes To Host The Video Series

Our athletes have reached the very pinnacle of their sports, and so under the theme ‘The Best Interview The Best’, we are deeply honored to have some of the island’s best athletes as special guest hosts including three time Olympian Tyrone Smith, Bermuda football captain Eva Frazzoni, professional boxer Andre Lambe, professional footballer LeiLanni Nesbeth, top runner Dage Minors, former professional footballer Dante Leverock, top cyclist Dominique Mayho, tennis star Gavin Manders, and football legend Clyde Best.

LeiLanni Nesbeth, the Bermuda women’s national team and Chicago Red Stars footballer, has interviewed triple jumper Jah-Nhai Perinchief, who will make his Olympic debut.

Former Bermuda football team captain Dante Leverock interviewed swimming siblings Emma and Jack Harvey; three-time Olympic long jumper Tyrone Smith interviewed triathlete Tyler Smith; and top cyclist Dominique Mayho has caught up with triathlete Erica Hawley.

Professional boxer Andre Lambe stepped out of the boxing ring to interview Paralympian Yushae DeSilva-Andrade, and top middle-distance runner Dage Minors spoke with Paralympian Jessica Lewis.

Also among our star-studded guest hosts are Gavin Manders, one of the island’s most accomplished tennis player, who has spoken to Olympic sailor Adriana Penruddocke, and Bermuda women’s football team captain Eva Frazzoni interviewed rower Dara Alizadeh, who is competing at his second Olympics.

And in a video for the history books, legendary Bermuda footballer Clyde Best has sat down with fellow trailblazing athlete Katura Horton-Perinchief, the first Black woman from any nation in the world to compete in Olympic diving, to discuss her role as Chef de Mission at the upcoming Games.

We will also have a special broadcast featuring the defending gold medalist Dame Flora Duffy, which was filmed on location in Colorado, and we also interviewed Bermuda’s first Olympic medalist Clarence Hill.

This series will present an in-depth look at our Olympians and Paralympians, and will also showcase that our top athletes also are talented interviewers, with the athlete to athlete format providing in-depth sports talk, insight, light-hearted laughter, and you will also find out which Cup Match team our athletes support.

Athlete ‘Journalist’ Pay Donated To Bermuda Special Olympics

Thanks to our sponsors — Butterfield & Vallis, Auto Solutions, Clarien Bank and One Communications – we will provide extensive coverage of the upcoming Games over the next few weeks, and this video series is a part of the special coverage.

All of the athlete guest hosts were excited to assist in elevating our coverage and showcasing our Olympians and Paralympians and volunteered their time, and in keeping with the spirit of the interview series, they were happy to have their ‘journalist pay check’ donated to the Bermuda Special Olympics, for a total of $1,500.

Special Olympics Bermuda are thrilled that the Island’s top athletes are supporting them, and said, “On behalf of the Board and athletes of Special Olympics Bermuda, we express our deepest gratitude for the generous donation extended to us. As Bermuda rightfully focuses on our local Olympians and Paralympians as they vie for glory in Paris, we feel honored and are most grateful to have been considered for such a thoughtful gesture of support.

“The journey to qualify for these esteemed events is a testament not only to the athletes’ incredible skill, but also to their dedication, determination, resilience, and commitment. They serve as shining examples to our own athletes, demonstrating that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.

“As we eagerly watch and cheer on both delegations, we send them our heartfelt wishes for success. Should victory elude them, we stand by and share our Special Olympics motto: ‘Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’ This ethos embodies the spirit of Special Olympics Bermuda and serves as a guiding light for our athletes, reminding them that true strength lies in the courage to try, regardless of the outcome.”

Video Series To Start This Week

The video series - which truly showcases Bermudian excellence with both interviewer and interviewee - will begin this week on Bernews.
