15 Students Finish SkillCraft Youth Internship
Fifteen high school students completed the six-week SkillCraft Youth Internship, gaining experience in social media marketing.
A spokesperson said, “Fifteen high school students are leaving the six-week SkillCraft Youth Internship with a newfound appreciation for social media marketing.
“In its third year, SkillCraft paired fifteen youth interns with fifteen local organisations to provide assistance with social media content planning and creation. For three days each week, the interns attended workshops to enhance their social media marketing knowledge. They spent the remaining two days each week at their host organisation to gather content and learn more about the inner workings of the organisations.
“While many of the interns were already familiar with social media as everyday users, they needed to develop an understanding of marketing basics to create a social media strategy and create effective content. During the six-week programme, the interns discovered how to use social media as a marketing tool, engage audiences and achieve their organisations’ objectives. The interns also learned about paid social media advertising, how social media fits into a larger marketing campaign and how artificial intelligence can be used as a marketing tool.”
An intern, Shenice Maylor, reflected, “There’s a lot to learn from the internship about life in general and skills that you need in your adult life. You learn so much about business, how to promote it and much more. You meet new people, can potentially gain a job and learn more about yourself. You will step out of your comfort zone, but it’s a very safe space. I will recommend this program to youths in Bermuda, especially if they have an interest in business, or do not know what they want to do.”
The spokesperson said, “The youth interns were matched with the following organisations: Acacia Tucker [Westmeath], Azure Burgess [Cassine], Desy Crockwell [Bermuda Cricket Board], Henok Simons [Pads Pass], Jazarah Codrington Edmead [Tomorrow’s Voices], Keira Haak [Bermuda National Trust], Mya Smith [Keep Bermuda Beautiful], Nilayah Butterfield [Adult Education School], Sarai Packwood [Scholars Learning Centre], Shenice Maylor [Sweat Suites Studio], Shia Bean [Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute], Sydney Santos [Bermuda Health Council], Vanessa Daley [Xpressions], Zadok Simons [Association of Bermuda International Companies] and Zayne Kirkpatrick [Employee Assistance Programme]. At the end of the programme, the interns presented their work to their mentors from the host organisations.”
“We thoroughly enjoyed having our SkillCraft intern with us this summer,” stated Jordan Smith, Development Officer of the Bermuda National Trust. “Her fresh perspective brought new insights to our organisation, enabling us to see things from a different point of view. Her contributions were invaluable, and her positive attitude made a lasting impact on our team.”
“The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] was delighted to be selected as a SkillCraft Host Business for a second year running,” stated Jessica Bowers, BUEI Marketing and Communication Manager. “The SkillCraft Youth Internship Team does a phenomenal job in preparing both the summer interns and host businesses for the six-week summer youth internship in social media. Each year, we have been very pleased with the level of support we received and impressed by the amount of growth and confidence we observed in our paired intern.”
The spokesperson said, “SkillCraft is made possible by generous support from sponsors: the Centennial Bermuda Foundation, which granted $100,000 to fund the programme; iRepair, which loaned laptops to the interns; Digicel, which loaned mobile devices to the interns; and The Clarity Institute, which provided the location. The Berkeley Institute, Cedarbridge Academy, Somersfield Academy and Warwick Academy were instrumental in recruiting students to participate.”
SkillCraft Co-founder and Programme Director, Margot Shane remarked, “It has been a great pleasure and honour to run the SkillCraft Youth Internship for the third year in a row. Each cohort has its unique qualities; this year’s interns stood out for their talent and dedication. They are hard-working, eager to learn and hugely creative. Every host organisation has spoken of the immense value of having an intern and to the rewarding experience of seeing the interns grow over such a short period of time. Congratulations to the cohort of 2024; you are truly an inspirational set of young people and anyone would be lucky to hire and work with you!”
The spokesperson said, “Recruitment for next year’s internship will begin in January 2025. To learn more about the SkillCraft Youth Internship programme, please visit skillcraft.bm.”
