The 2024 award presentation, honoring the remarkable fielding performances of Cup Match players, will be the final event in this iconic series.

“Established a quarter-century ago, the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award has been a cornerstone of BHCS’s commitment to recognizing and promoting athletic excellence. Each year, the award has honored individuals who exemplify precision, dedication, and teamwork—values that BHCS deeply cherishes.”

Dr. Ewart Brown, Founder and Chairman of Bermuda Healthcare Services, stated, “Retiring the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award was a significant decision. The spokesperson said, “Although this is the last award presentation under the auspices of Bermuda Healthcare Services, we are happy to say that an agreement has been reached with Rolfe Commissiong for him to resume ownership of the award and its presentation.

“Bermuda Healthcare Services extends its heartfelt gratitude to all past recipients, nominators, and supporters of the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award. Their invaluable contributions have established and maintained the high standards of athletic performance and sportsmanship that BHCS is proud to support.”

Dr. Mahesh Reddy remarked, “Good morning everyone, I am honored to stand before you today as the Medical Director of Bermuda Healthcare Services to share a few remarks on this year’s final Safe Hands Award. This prestigious award has a rich history dating back to 1998, and today we celebrate not only our current winner but also the legacy of excellence it represents.

“Since its inception, a total of $25,000.00 has been awarded to outstanding athletes who embody the spirit and skill of Bermuda’s Cup Match Classic tradition. Each recipient, selected with great care, has received a $1,000.00 cheque, contributing to the recognition and encouragement of their talents.

“The Safe Hands Award was originally established by Telebermuda International under the guidance of Rolfe Commissiong. Shortly thereafter, Bermuda Healthcare Services proudly became the sole sponsor and assumed full responsibility for the annual award presentation, ensuring its continuity and growth.

“In 2003, the trophy was renamed the Bermuda Healthcare Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award to commemorate the remarkable achievements of Calvin “Bummy” Symonds, who led St George’s to eight victories between 1961 and 1969.

“Lastly, on behalf of our founder and chairman, Dr. Ewart Brown, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to cricket legend Dennis Wainwright, who has diligently undertaken the task of picking the winner each year. His expertise and dedication have been instrumental in upholding the integrity and prestige of this award.

“Once again, thank you all for being here today, and congratulations to this year’s Bermuda Healthcare Services Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award recipient. Your excellence on the field continues to inspire us all. Thank you.”
