“The implementation of this advanced CCTV system underscores the Government’s focus on public safety and the use of the latest technology,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of National Security is pleased to provide an update on the progress of the Government’s new islandwide CCTV network, a key initiative to enhance public safety and support the Bermuda Police Service in their efforts to deter and investigate crime.

“The Ministry is in the final stages of the full implementation of the new system, which, is already proving to be a vital tool in law enforcement as several of the cameras are already operational.

“To date, 190 of the planned 247 cameras have been successfully installed and are operational, actively monitoring strategic locations across the Island. The Ministry continues to monitor and test these cameras to ensure optimal performance and coverage.

“The Ministry of National Security is working closely with its partners to bring this project to completion, including Digicel Bermuda, the Corporations of Hamilton and St George’s and BELCO, all of whom have contributed significantly to its implementation. Minister Weeks stated, “Their efforts have been instrumental in our progress thus far.”

The Minister also acknowledged the police officers who received specialist training earlier this year. “I commend our officers who underwent comprehensive training at the Police COMOPS centre. Their proficiency in utilising the new system, including advanced video analytics, will be crucial to its success.”

Minister Weeks also addressed the issue of privacy relative to these security cameras. He stated, “We understand and respect the privacy matters in the deployment of this new camera system.

“I want to assure everyone that our system is designed with stringent privacy safeguards that will ensure that privacy rights are protected. I hasten to add that we have had a dialogue with the Privacy Commissioner on this matter to ensure that we have considered all factors around privacy.

“No cameras will intrude on individual privacy. The primary focus is on public spaces and roadways. We are committed to maintaining a balance between boosting security and respecting the privacy rights of all residents.”

“No cameras will intrude on individual privacy.”

    No there is an oxymoron.

  2. Hilarious says:

Where are the human rights groups on this? Why are they not filming officials out in public so we can see where these government employees go and spend their time at taxpayer expense? There is no expectation of privacy in public.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

“Where are the human rights groups on this?”

Would it matter? Only those people the PLP Government approve of are allowed to enjoy human rights in Bermuda.

    • Payattention says:

Unbelievable. When there are antisocial incidents, people want to criticise the government for not having CCTV or working CCTV in the area. Now that the government has made a commitment to “focus on public safety” with technology that will serve as “a key initiative to enhance public safety” and “support the Bermuda Police service in their efforts to deter and investigate crime”, the government is receiving negative feedback. Make up your minds folks.

  3. Question says:

What specifically and exactly are these cameras being used for? There has been no detail on that at all.

  4. Red Pill says:

Big Brother will be watching you because you stood by and believed all the lies about it.

  5. Red Pill says:

Those cameras are being installed for future Big Brother surveillance of the population. We all know that even if they don’t.
