Minister Weeks Addresses CCTV Concerns
“I hear your concerns about privacy and the placement of CCTV cameras in your communities, and I want to assure you that they are being taken seriously,” Minister of National Security Michael Weeks said.
Minister Weeks said, “As your Minister for National Security, I want to begin by emphasizing that your voices matter. I hear your concerns about privacy and the placement of CCTV cameras in your communities, and I want to assure you that they are being taken seriously.
“My top priority is the safety and well-being of every resident of Bermuda. A strong partnership between the government and the people we serve is essential to achieving that goal. While CCTV cameras have played a critical role in crime prevention and law enforcement efforts, I fully understand that their presence raises valid privacy concerns.
“I assure you that we are actively reviewing these concerns and assessing the placement of both existing and future cameras to ensure they meet our shared objectives- enhancing security while respecting individual privacy. We will approach this process thoughtfully and transparently, with the goal of striking the right balance between safety and privacy.
“Engagement with residents, community leaders, and key stakeholders will remain a priority throughout this process. Your input is invaluable, and we are committed to working together to find solutions that address your concerns while keeping Bermuda safe for everyone.
“Thank you for your patience, feedback, and trust as we navigate this important issue. Rest assured, my team and I are listening, and we are dedicated to implementing a CCTV system that supports security and the rights of our community. Thank you”

SO, We don’t have a robust and fully implements CCTV system. How long has the charade been going on?
This Government are exhausting with their claims of doing this and that and NOT DELIVERING.
Roads aren’t done, Bridges aren’t replaced, Sandy’s 360 closed, Properties in Government portfolio left to rot, broken causeway, SAVVYY music studio, Fintech, this list goes on….
Jobs available are around 950 less than before COVID, Bermudians are being priced out of our own country, having to leave, all while the PLP give concessions and our land to foreign wealthy people and businesses.
The Farm facility at $15million. How is that going to reduce local produce costs???? Why not just give adults a share of the $15M (plus cost overuns) and running costs. Am sure that would save us money over a great number of years. Why are we the taxpayer paying for the facility? what guarantees of price cuts have we been given to spend $15 million dollars on a building?
want the cameras suppose to be complete Christmas 2023!
How about all the Ministers and the Premier leading by example? Let’s use CCTV to follow them around the island for a month and see where they go, what they do, and who they meet. How could any of them be against that?
I’d be more concerned that after 2 years we have a barley functing system, large numbers of cameras not online, noboday monitoring it 24/7, little to no training for the BPS where the system is placed and disputes over payment between Govt and Digicel
“little to no training for the BPS”
There is no need to train the BPS. The Minister said recently that CCTV was monitored by the Ministry of National Security, not the BPS.
HA! Good one.
Yet another example of gross PLP incompetence. The original grand annoucement of the CCTV cameras being operational was indeed December 2023.
Here we are, over a year late, and the Minister is talking about another year before they will be operational. How far has this one gone over budget? Why is it taking so long? Is this another example of the contract being given to a PLP party insider who has no experience in such a system?
Come Feb 18th will we get another 5 years of expensive incompetence or willthe voters decide that they have had enough and vote for a change?
In a quarter of a century the PLP has not learned much about managing Bermuda other than clever ways of enriching their own pockets.
Will the cameras be available to be viewed online by anyone such as cameras operated by state DOTs and municipalities across the US and Canada?
The cameras at scenic locations would be a great tourism promotion tool. Who doesn’t roam around online looking at places they have been or places they might like to go?
I know, I know. Thinking way too far outside the box for This Government. The views of a road are a matter of National Security and all that. Good grief!
