BRSC: Keeping Our Children Safe On Our Roads
“Road safety during the back-to-school season is a shared responsibility, and by staying alert, following traffic laws, and teaching our children how to navigate the roads safely, we can create a safer environment for everyone,” Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] Chairman Dennis Lister said.
Mr Lister said, “As we usher in the new school year, it’s vital to address the road safety issues that come with the back-to-school season. With more children walking, biking, and being driven to school, our roads become busier, and the need for heightened safety measures becomes paramount.
“One of the most pressing issues is the increased traffic around schools during drop-off and pick-up times. Drivers must exercise extra caution in these areas. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason—to protect children who may unexpectedly step into the street. It’s crucial to adhere to these limits and be vigilant for crossing guards, who are there to ensure safe passage for students. Remember, distractions like texting or checking your phone can have dire consequences in these busy areas.
“Another significant concern is the safety of students who walk or bike to school. We must remind our children to use crosswalks, obey traffic signals, and stay on sidewalks whenever possible. Biking students should always wear helmets and be familiar with the rules of the road. It’s also important for parents to talk with their children about avoiding distractions, such as using phones or headphones while navigating our busy roads.
“For drivers, being aware of school buses is another critical aspect of road safety. When a bus stops we urge you not overtake as the children enter and exit the bus. Overtaking a school bus can be extremely dangerous as children may be unpredictable in their movements and may not always be aware of oncoming traffic. By overtaking a stopped school bus, you risk striking a child who suddenly steps into your path. The few seconds you might save by passing the bus are never worth the potential consequences.
“Lastly, we must address the importance of patience and courtesy during these busy times. Whether you’re a parent in the drop-off line, a driver passing through a school zone, or a pedestrian near a school, taking a few extra moments to prioritize safety over speed can prevent accidents and ensure that all students get to and from school safely.
“In conclusion, road safety during the back-to-school season is a shared responsibility. By staying alert, following traffic laws, and teaching our children how to navigate the roads safely, we can create a safer environment for everyone. Let’s all do our part to ensure that every child arrives at school and returns home safely.”
