City CEO Updates Construction On Spurling Hill
City CEO Dwayne Caines provided an update on the recent construction at the junction of Reid Street and Spurling Hill.
Mr. Caines said, “I’d also like to clarify some details in response to the public inquiries we’ve received.
“The upgrades at this junction are part of a broader, long-term initiative to modernize traffic signals and road layouts across the City. Our top priority is public safety.
“Throughout this process we engaged an overseas traffic consultancy company to ensure best practice and compliance with international traffic standards and to ensure integration with all other City traffic intersections moving forward.
“We also consulted with the Bermuda Government Highways Section and adjacent landowners.
“One of the main improvements in this project is the introduction of a central pedestrian island between Cavendish Road and Spurling Hill. This new design significantly enhances pedestrian safety and makes the crossing wheelchair accessible—an essential upgrade given the increasing pedestrian use we identified through our pre-project research. Before these changes, pedestrians had limited safe crossing options, which we are now addressing.
“The narrowing of the carriageways on Cavendish Road and Spurling Hill is based on best practices for urban streets, designed to encourage slower and safer driving speeds. These changes are fully compliant with, and in fact exceed, international standards.
“Due to public inconvenience caused by the one-lane closure, we reopened the junction slightly ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, this meant the road markings and signage were not completed beforehand, but we are addressing this today. The recent bad weather has delayed some of the road marking efforts, but we are working diligently to resolve this as quickly as possible.
“We understand the significance of this junction to the public, and we’ve worked hard to reopen it swiftly while maintaining a focus on safety. Once the final signage and markings are in place, we are confident this area will provide a much safer and more accessible environment for all road users.”
