Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Presents ‘The Tempest’
The Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company will present a Bermuda-themed, musical adaptation of The Tempest from September 27th to October 6th, 2024.
A spokesperson said, “Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company is presenting the world premiere of a Bermuda-themed, musical adaptation of The Tempest from September 27th through October 6th, 2024. The show runs 90 minutes and contains roughly half of Shakespeare’s text, plus twelve original musical numbers with contemporary lyrics that make the show easy to understand and enjoy.
“The core principle of Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Co. is that all Bermudians ages 18 & under can see all of their productions for free. [Parents should still reserve tickets for young audience members online. The show is appropriate for anyone ages 12 & up.]
“Opening night at Rosewood Bermuda [9/27] is now sold out. Other venues include Fort St. Catherine [9/28 & 10/5, Rain Location: Christ Church Warwick] and Clearwater Beach in partnership with Sunjammers Bar & Grill [9/29, Rain Date: 9/30]. Tickets for these performances are available at: www.devils-isle.org/shows.
“The production will kick off Art Month in Bermuda on October 1st at Cambridge Beaches. Tickets for this particular event are being distributed by the hotel; for more information, please visit their website: www.cambridgebeaches.com/shakespeare.
“The closing performance on October 6th in the Victualling Yard [Dockyard] is sponsored by WEDCO and is completely free to the general public. The company asks that patrons bring a blanket or chairs to this particular event.
“The show is directed by the Company’s founding Artistic Director, Séamus Miller, a life-long part-time Bermuda resident and recent graduate of the Ignite Entrepreneurial Accelerator Program in Hamilton. Mr. Miller is also the Associate Artistic Director of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in Baltimore, Maryland, where his professional productions of Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Romeo & Juliet have been seen by tens of thousands of middle and high school students—in addition to the general public, often free of charge.
“Music & Lyrics for The Tempest were written by Mr. Miller and Emily Erickson, who plays Ariel in the production. Both artists received their MFA in Shakespeare Performance from The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy at George Washington University [Washington, DC]. The cast’s performance credits range from television [Law & Order, The Blacklist] to the most prestigious theaters in the United States [Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, NYC’s Shakespeare in the Park, and many others].
“This is the inaugural production for Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company [the company staged a two-actor production of Romeo & Juliet as a fundraiser at Christ Church Warwick in May]. The company is actively raising funds so that all subsequent productions can be built entirely in Bermuda and provide professional opportunities for local artists. Interested parties should contact: seamus@devils-isle.org.”
