A groundbreaking celebration for the Woodland Grove Care Centre took place yesterday [Sept 26], marking a key milestone in the development of the new facility.
A spokesperson said, “Members of the community, including donors and contractors, came together to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Woodland Grove Care Centre last night.
“Friends of Hospice recently broke ground at the site on Spice Hill Road, marking the first step in the multi-year construction project for Bermuda’s first purpose-built hospice palliative care and senior living centre. The new Care Centre is expected to provide the community with more efficient, compassionate and holistic care services when it opens.
“Guests began their evening with a tour of the new site, visiting five stations scattered across the hillside, including a viewing platform which affords a stunning 360 view that patients of the Centre will one day enjoy. Each station was manned by volunteers and educated guests on the various aspects of the Woodland Grove, from its Eden Alternative care ethos, which prioritises the needs of patients and loved ones, to its farm-to-table ambitions. There were even special guests, in the form of a selection of emotional support animals, which patients will be able to avail themselves of.”
Jennifer Mahoney, Executive Director of the Friends of Hospice, said, “We are so delighted to be able to celebrate this incredible milestone for Woodland Grove Care Centre. It was enormously moving to see so many different members of the community come together to mark the occasion. We are so grateful to them and our partners, including D&J Construction and Lindberg & Simmons, as well as all of our volunteers who have made this possible.”
Zach Moniz, Chairman of the Board for Friends of Hospice, said, “With Woodland Grove we are building not only a hospice but a multi-functional care centre. The Care Centre will provide world-class care to those who need it, add beds to our sorely needed senior housing and provide a place of learning for those looking for a career in palliative care.
“While this is a tremendous first step towards this goal, there is still much work to be done, and we urge the community to look inside their hearts and to consider how they can help us build this Care Centre.”
Tinee Furbert, Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said, “It was so wonderful to share in the celebration of the groundbreaking of Bermuda’s first purpose-built care centre. This much needed facility promises to empower our community to care for those in need, from all corners of our society, with efficiency and thoughtful compassion.”
