‘Series Of Community Helping Programmes’

“As part of mid-year budget initiatives, the Ministry of National Security announced a series of community helping programmes that will be made possible thanks to the additional funding,” the government said.

A Government spokesperson said, “The public will recall that in July, during his “Address to Bermuda”, the Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, pledged that government will focus its efforts on implementing additional ways to provide more support for Bermudians and their families.

“The Premier also shared that when the House of Assembly resumed this month, Government will present a mid-year budget review containing measures that will deliver a meaningful difference in the lives of Bermudians now.

“As such, Government is investing additional funds to address critical social issues through a set of significant initiatives that will be introduced in the House of Assembly today [Sept. 20].

“And today, as part of mid-year budget initiatives, the Ministry of National Security announced a series of community helping programmes that will be made possible thanks to the additional funding.”

“This significant investment allows us to expand and enhance programmes that directly benefit our communities,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks. “The Government is committed to tackling the most pressing social issues affecting Bermudians.

“These initiatives reflect our collective commitment to building a better and safer Bermuda by investing in the well-being and safety of its residents. Additional funding for Ministries will allow us to provide enhanced opportunities for families needing counselling following traumatic events and ensure that our people are provided with the help they need in times of crisis.”

The Government spokesperson said, “Some of the initiatives that the community can expect to see implemented include the following:

  • Empowering Youth Through Education and Training:

“A key focus of the enhanced initiatives is supporting participants in the Gang Violence Reduction Taskforce’s outreach programme to further their education and vocational skills.

“Aligned with the Violence Reduction Strategy, this effort provides structured personal and professional development opportunities for our youth. Participants nearing high school completion will receive assistance to achieve their GED within an academic year. Those who qualify for Bermuda College courses can access financial support that will cover tuition, fees, books, and materials. The programme also offers a variety of training options, including apprenticeships, local certifications, and opportunities for overseas training.

  • Strengthening Crisis Response and Community Support:

“The Ministry is establishing a coordinated Crisis Response Team to provide timely and comprehensive assistance, such as counselling, to individuals and communities affected by violence.

“By expanding its capacity and resources, the team will be better equipped to offer prompt support and a broader range of services during critical times. Complementing this effort, a new Community Counselling Programme will offer personalised support to those impacted by violence and trauma. Recognising the profound effects on families, children, and victims, the programme provides access to trained grief and trauma counsellors for a series of dedicated sessions.”

Minister Weeks concluded, “Addressing the emotional and psychological needs of those affected by violence and other social challenges is essential. As the Premier rightly said, these initiatives are part of the Government’s broader strategy to ensure that the benefits of Bermuda’s progress are shared by all, not just a few. Through these support services, we aim to foster healing and restoration within our communities.”

The Government spokesperson said, “The public is encouraged to tune in to today’s House of Assembly session to learn more about the full range of initiatives being unveiled by Premier Burt under the mid-year budget review. Residents can visit www.parliament.bm to listen live.”
