Ministry: Crews Clearing Roads & Debris

After yesterday’s heavy rains and subsequent flooding across Bermuda, the Ministry of Public Works’ Department of Works and Engineering has “been working to mitigate the impact.”

A Government spokesperson said, “Today, crews made progress in clearing roads and debris to facilitate the drainage of floodwaters and repair potholes damaged by yesterday’s weather event.”

“Crews worked diligently from St. George’s to Somerset along South Road and Middle Road, ensuring that major thoroughfares are clear and safe for residents and emergency services,” said Minister of Public Works Lt. Col. David Burch.

“However, with tomorrow’s forecast predicting additional rainfall, we urge all residents to play their part by clearing their properties of any items that could obstruct the flow of water. High levels of rain can temporarily exceed the Island’s ability to quickly drain water away, leading to inevitable flooding.”

A Government spokesperson added, “The Department’s efforts today included:

  • Removing obstructions from key roads to ensure unobstructed water flow.
  • Addressing road damage to enhance drainage efficiency and road safety.
  • Operations spanned from St. George’s to Somerset, covering South Road and Middle Road.

“Work is planned to resume islandwide tomorrow morning, weather permitting, to continue these essential services and further strengthen the Island’s resilience against flooding.

“Residents are encouraged to ensure that their properties are free of obstructions such as leaves, branches, and other debris that could hinder water drainage during the upcoming rains.

“By working together, the community can help minimise the impact of continued heavy rainfall and minimise further flooding.”
