Interactive Village Gathering On October 12
An Interactive Village Gathering will be held on Saturday [Oct 12] from 4.00pm to 5.30pm at the Victor Scott School celebrating the 75th anniversary of free primary education in Bermuda.
A spokesperson said, “Reminded of the African proverb ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ a collaborative group of community stakeholders have come together to stage an Interactive Village Gathering on Saturday, October 12th from 4.00pm to 5.30pm at the Victor Scott School. The goal of the gathering is to remind parents from across the island that they are not alone and to empower them in their key role of optimizing the potential of their children.
“Those others present for the media conference included Sharon Apopa – Evening Light Church; Dennis Bean – activist; Terica Dillas – Unity in the Community; Diane Gordon – Red Cross; Shawnette Perott and Raymon Brangman – Dandy Town F.C.; and Cathy and Daryl Simms – Salvation Army.
“They all expressed their passion for serving their community, noting that this Village Gathering leverages the efforts of the particular groups in light of the collaborative nature of the event.
“This 2024-2025 school year happens to mark the 75th anniversary of free primary education. This milestone of a basic right was achieved after 25 years of lobbying by members of the Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT], as well as the seminal campaign initiated by the Bermuda Workers Association [BWA - predecessor of BIU] in the mid 1940s, resulting in the iconic petition delivered to London by Dr Gordon.
“The collaborative spirit that fostered the beginning of that significant transformation of Bermuda during the late 40s exemplified the expression of agency by ordinary people. As we engage the challenges of the 2020s, we are reminded on whose shoulders we all stand, connecting us to our best selves.
“It is in this spirit that community stakeholders, including non-profits, sports clubs, churches, and civil servants, are volunteering on this collaboration. The Bermuda Union of Teachers has provided support for the gathering.
“All of those attending the gathering will receive food for thought. On a first come, first served basis, attendees will also have available free light food for eating while supplies last.”
