Review: ‘Old School Returns’ At Leopards Club
[Written by Dale Butler]
Leopards Club was the venue on Saturday, October 12 for entrepreneur and live music impresario Mickey Robinson to host an eager audience that has been supportive of his ventures since he started in 2022. We were treated to a delicious meal by Chef Raymond Dowling of Quality Catering and a seamless evening of music, highlighting the wealth of talent we have on the island.
The band Paradise, led by Wendy Flood Robinson, with Wency Woolridge on bass, Desta Zion on vocals and guitar, and Ace Cepeda on guitar, kicked things off with songs like:
- At Last
- Our Day Will Come
- My Cherie Amour
- Summer Breeze
- Love Unconditionally – written and performed by band member Desta Zion, a chart-stopper.
The band did a fantastic job with their extensive repertoire of songs. Having appeared at the Bermuda Dance in North Carolina, I would strongly encourage you to book them for your special events. Their tribute to Frankie Beverly [December 1946 – September 10, 2024], American songwriter and lead singer of the soul and funk band Maze, was very well received.
The Bermuda international band Hindsight followed, encouraging the audience to dance. The superstars set a rapid pace with songs like:
- Love Never Felt So Good
- Lovely Day
- Diggin’ on You – a pop ballad by TLC, written and produced by Babyface
- No Woman No Cry – by Bob Marley, whom they saw perform in San Diego in 1978
- Flowers – Miley Cyrus
- I Wish – Stevie Wonder
- So Amazing – Luther Vandross
- Rock with You – Michael Jackson
They had great harmony and connected well with the crowd, who enjoyed their performance.
“Royalty,” the Bermuda 2023 Idol winner, was introduced by her manager, Willie Ferguson. As Danyel Webbe, she ensured we would never forget her voice, performing songs like:
- Writing on the Wall
- At Last
- The Greatest Love of All
- Home
- Ready for Love
The audience was stunned. She has performed in the USA, UK, and Africa. Bermuda, she needs her own stage! With a beautiful and strong voice, she clearly demonstrated why she won the Idol competition, earning a standing ovation from the Leopard’s patrons.
The evening continued with a second set from Hindsight, followed by DJ Pepe. The $80 night was well worth it. I salute Mickey for starting this regular series around the island and on the sea. While attendance wasn’t at 100%, this non-profit activity has a bright future.
Don’t miss the next event: Jazz N’ Soul at the Warwick Workman’s Club on November 2 from 6.00pm to 12.00am, featuring Willard Burch, Marvin Ford, and the Tino Martinez Quartette, with food by The Food Hub. If you’re interested, contact Mickey on WhatsApp at 705-1997.
