Creative Students Raising Funds For Charity
The Bermuda High School’s [BHS] Creative Stars Club has been working hard to raise funds for Hopes and Dreams, a Guatemalan-based charity focused on education.
A spokesperson said, “Under the guidance of Creative Design Teacher Mrs Jodie Walters, the students are honing their entrepreneurial skills, focusing on designing and laser cutting products, such as jewellery, and key chains, which they then sell to the broader student body and the BHS community.
“The Creative Stars, which comprises of 12 members [Ranique Barker, Xao Coddington, Arabella Davies, Zooey de los Santos, Kira Dunley-Owen, Harper Franklin, Tilly Frith, Ellise Leamey, Isabella Neururer Alyssa Penrose, Soraiya Trott and Isabella Watson], started this school year by crafting Halloween themed items to sell at the BHS PTA’s Halloween Fair. Over a period of three weeks, the girls worked through their lunch times, making, advertising and selling their products. Their items proved to be a huge success at the Halloween Fair, with the Creative Stars selling out of their inventory!”
“The mission of the Creative Stars is to use the skills that they are learning in school, and the tools and equipment we have in the Renaissance Re Creation and Innovation Space, to raise enough money to sponsor the education of a student in Guatemala. This year, we set a goal to raise $360.00, which is the amount needed to provide a middle school student with a scholarship, including enrolment fees, tuition, school supplies, tutoring, computer lab access and health care. I am ecstatic to say that we have surpassed this goal and are on our way to raising enough money to provide a second scholarship. I am incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and dedication.” said Mrs Jodie Walters.
Head of School, Ms Carol A. Swainson, added, “I am so proud of these young designers and entrepreneurs! As a Round Square School, we are committed to taking action to help and understand those in different circumstances. It’s very special that our students are contributing to a community in Guatemala, sharing the gift of education with their peers around the world.” BHS will continue its outreach in Guatemala during the remainder of the academic year, as a cohort of Secondary students will travel to the Central American nation in March as part of a service project.
A spokesperson added, “During the month of November, the Creative Stars have dedicated themselves to creating more festive-themed items, which they will be selling at the BHS Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 30th. They will have holiday earrings, necklaces, bracelets and keychains available for purchase in the BHS Gymnasium from 10am to 2pm.”
