Ministry Launches Outerbridge Memorial Award
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the launch of the Outerbridge Memorial Award, an annual recognition honouring outstanding contributions to sustainable fishing in Bermuda.
A Government spokesperson said, “Throughout Bermuda’s history, fisheries and the fishing community have played a vital role in shaping and supporting the management of our marine resources. The contributions of the late Ewart Outerbridge and his son, Linwood Outerbridge, exemplify the collaborative spirit and commitment to sustainability that have been integral to our past successes.

“Ewart Outerbridge served on the Board of Works, Agriculture & Fisheries in the late 1960s and early 1970s, while Linwood Outerbridge served on the Marine Resources Board during the 1990s and 2000s. Together, they worked closely with scientists to research the life cycles of spiny lobster and grouper species, which led to regulations such as minimum size limits and closed seasons—measures that remain critical to managing these resources today.
“Ewart and Linwood were also active members of the Bermuda Commercial Fishermen’s Association and championed initiatives like the seasonal protection of Red Hind spawning grounds and other essential conservation measures. In recognition of his leadership, the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute also awarded Linwood Outerbridge the Peter Gladding Memorial Award.
“In honour of their legacy, the Outerbridge Memorial Award will be presented for the first time on World Fisheries Day in 2025. It will recognise individuals who demonstrate leadership and innovation in advancing sustainable fishing practices. This award will serve to:
- Celebrate the contributions of those working towards sustainable fisheries in Bermuda.
- Highlight the importance of the fishing industry to our community.
- Inspire the next generation of fishermen and conservation leaders.”
Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban stated, “The Outerbridge family has set a remarkable example of collaboration and stewardship within Bermuda’s fishing community. This award is a tribute to their legacy and an opportunity to acknowledge others who continue their work.”
The spokesperson said, “The Ministry looks forward to sharing the steps for submitting nominations for the Outerbridge Memorial Award, which will celebrate our fishing community’s contributions and support sustainable practices that preserve Bermuda’s marine heritage.”
