OBA’s Smith On Recent Violence, Govt & More
“Why has the Minister of National Security remained silent in the wake of the recent shootings and stabbing?” Shadow National Security Minister Ben Smith said.
Mr. Smith said, “It feels like the Government has accepted this type of behaviour in our community. Where is the outrage?
“What message are we sending to the perpetrators? That they have the free reign to do what they like without consequence? Bermuda cannot afford this. Residents deserve to know that the Government has not become immune to violence in the community—especially where it involves guns and knives. Government’s silence is deafening.”
Mr Smith continues: “The community needs to know that anti-social behaviour will not to be tolerated and the powers that be will do all they can to eradicate it.
“While the One Bermuda Alliance is pleased there will be an increase in the number of police recruits in 2026. With retirements, suspensions and the potential for burnout from excessive overtime during all this increased violent crime. The number of officers needs to be increased in order for the Bermuda Police Service to have the resources needed to conduct community policing.”
Mr Smith added. “Perhaps use personnel from the Royal Bermuda Regiment to perform guard duties. This will help Police remained focused on their core duties.”
