Raleigh Bermuda Teens Embrace Fitness
Last week, Raleigh Bermuda concluded its impactful Brave Fit Camp, a “pioneering health and fitness program for Bermuda’s youth designed to address the community’s rising obesity, diabetes, and inactivity rates.”
A spokesperson said, “This unique initiative aligns with Raleigh’s mission of preparing young Bermudians, both mentally and physically, for transformative overseas expeditions to locations like Costa Rica, Kenya, Borneo, and South Africa.
“Brave Fit Camp fills a critical gap as many local teens, especially those over 14, often miss out on consistent physical activity.”
Raleigh’s Executive Director, Dany de Rodriguez, says, “We are deeply concerned about the health and wellness of our young people. When proper nutrition and fitness are neglected, it creates a ripple effect that impacts every aspect of their lives—leading to poor decision-making, preventable health complications, and serious learning challenges in the classroom.
“The Brave Fit Programme is the first of its kind, offering teenagers critical resources and hands-on experience to not only combat these health risks but also build vital life skills.
“This program empowers youth with confidence in the gym, nutritional awareness, and emotional management—all of which are crucial in addressing deeper, systemic issues in our community such as gang violence, anti-social behavior, and anger management.
“This is about giving our youth the tools to thrive and make healthier, positive choices for their futures.”=
The spokesperson said, “In partnership with Magnum Force Gym, owned by Karen Magnum, a strong supporter and advocate for youth. Under the guidance of Raleigh’s Programme Coordinator Ms. Keri Pacheco and dedicated Coaches Christine Miranda [Magnum Force Gym], Alex Dill [Primal Nation] and Cole Durham, students practiced self-defense, weight training, strength conditioning, and even boxing.
- Using Gym Machines and Equipment: Students gained confidence using gym equipment, learning to adjust settings, understand machine functions, and safely start with manageable weights.
- Weight Lifting and Strength Training Skills: The program introduced foundational movements like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, teaching proper form and gradual weight progression for strength-building.
- Cardiovascular Exercises: Teenagers learned to effectively use cardio machines like treadmills and rowing machines, exploring interval training for cardiovascular endurance.
- Resistance and Dynamic Progressive Exercises: Teenagers were introduced to resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, and progressive routines, emphasizing flexibility, muscle endurance, and balanced physical development.
“Also sponsored by Deloitte Bermuda, healthy snacks from Butterfield & Vallis and special gifts from Brown & Co., all supported the experience, reinforcing the community’s commitment to youth wellness.
“As Raleigh Bermuda celebrates its 20th anniversary, the organization reflects on its continued legacy of empowering youth. Over 250 teenagers aged 14–17 have participated in Raleigh’s Brave Programme, and with more than 185 Venturers’ Scholarships awarded to young adults ages 17–24 for 10-week overseas expeditions.
“To commemorate this milestone, Raleigh Bermuda invites the entire community to join the upcoming 20th Anniversary Trek Challenge on December 1, 2024, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Dockyard to Whale Bay.
“This adventure and fitness trek will raise essential funds for Raleigh Bermuda’s programs, celebrate two decades of impact, and inspire even more young Bermudians to embrace health, wellness, and adventure.
