‘Peace Tree’ Presented For Fort Scaur
The campaign to plant “peace trees” across Bermuda has continued with a tree presented to the Department of Parks “with the goal of having it planted at Fort Scaur.”
A spokesperson said, “Over recent years, a campaign involving ‘peace trees’ being planted throughout the island offered a community response to the cycle of violence. In fact, this initiative began at Government House just weeks following the outbreak of the Russia/Ukraine war, addressing the implications of the global culture which maintains might is right.
“Since that start, there have been ebbs and flows to the local cycle of murders. Over the last 14 months, we have seen sustained levels of plausible genocide in Gaza – unprecedented murderous violence shown worldwide via social media. This, in the context of international agencies – including the United Nations – being blocked by one or two players.
“This past weekend, Bermuda experienced its ninth murder since Bermuda Day. In encouraging each other to rally together in broadening our community response, the President of the Prison Officers Association has published his commitment to in-depth collaboration.
“Today we present a peace tree to the Department of Parks with the goal of having it planted at Fort Scaur in the new year. The significance is that Scaur Hill was the site of tragic murders during this past summer. However, this same neighbourhood was the site of secret negotiations that took place at the former Lantana Guest Cottages in 1990, which ended the tragic violence triggered in apartheid South Africa.
“This dualism speaks to ancient Chinese wisdom: crisis harbours both danger and opportunity
“Over this festive season, the whole community is invited to pause at some point for reflection and fast for at least one meal, just one day between December 24, 2024 and January 2, 2025. This being done under the theme ‘peace on earth and goodwill to all.”
