Arts Council Unveils Digital Grant System

January 27, 2025 | 3 Comments

The Bermuda Arts Council has “revolutionized its grant system, introducing a digital platform that offers a more streamlined and accessible process for local creatives.”

“This new approach brings several key benefits,” said the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Owen Darrell. “Transitioning to a fully digital system simplifies the submission process, enabling artists to apply from anywhere and reducing the administrative burden of manual applications.

“This revitalized system also represents a significant step forward in supporting Bermuda’s vibrant arts community, providing tools for growth and ensuring a fair and effective distribution of resources.”

The Government spokesperson said, “By explicitly communicating the range of potential grant amounts, the system helps applicants better plan their projects and manage their financial expectations. The updated grant structure is modeled on globally recognized standards, fostering greater transparency and positioning Bermuda’s arts community on par with international best practices.

“The grant system encourages artists to present their work professionally, enhancing their skills in proposal writing and project planning, which can open doors to future funding opportunities.”

Minister Darrell added, “With clearly set application windows and deadlines, the system promotes efficiency and ensures that both applicants and administrators are well-organized throughout the process. By closing the application cycle after deadlines, the Council can focus on thorough reviews and fair allocation of funds, ensuring that each application receives the attention it deserves.

“I want to commend the chair of the Bermuda Arts Council, Shanna Hollis, on bringing the BAC to international grants standards and encouraging creatives to apply as this is the primary Government funding arm for the arts.”

The Government spokesperson said, “For complete details on the new grant system and to apply visit http://artscouncil.bm or email artscouncil@gov.bm.”

“revolutionized its grant system, introducing a digital platform that offers a more streamlined and accessible process for local creatives.” – welcome to the 21st century.

PS. Make sure security is in place to prevent hackers from doing their thing. I would suggest only allowing Bermuda IP addresses access to the web pages.

That Mary Prince award is a badly thought out idea. It’s too narrow. It feels like it will only “honour” artists who employ political or social themes in their art. What about just “Artists and their art”? And how many times is the Govt going to honour Mary Prince?

All recognition of art and all support for art should be free from political motives.

As the Romans said, “ars artis gratia”. In English, “art for art’s sake”.
