The Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] marks the 60th anniversary of the BELCO Riots, a key moment in Bermuda’s labor history and the fight for workers’ rights.

A spokesperson said, “February 2, 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the historic BELCO Riots of 1965; a defining moment in Bermuda’s labor movement and a powerful step forward in the fight for trade unionism and social justice.

“On this day in 1965, members of the Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] took a courageous stand in solidarity with BELCO workers who sought union representation. Their peaceful demonstration was met with aggression when an English policeman broke the picket line and struck a female protester. In defense of their fellow worker, demonstrators responded, and this act of solidarity led to what was later labeled the BELCO Riots.

“Despite promises from then-Governor Lord Martonmere that no action would be taken against the BIU, several individuals—Kenny Paul, Vivian Ming, Kerwin Ratteray, George de Silva, Dr. Barbara Ball, Robert Johnson, and Gary Caisey—were later charged and taken to court. While most avoided prison, Kenny Paul was convicted of inciting a riot and sentenced to 10 months in prison. However, after serving four months, he successfully appealed his conviction, with his legal defense proving that the strike was not a riot, but a righteous fight for workers’ rights.

“The BELCO Riots of 1965 were a turning point in Bermuda’s labor history, cementing the right of workers to seek fair representation and shaping the foundation for the workplace protections and benefits we enjoy today. The bravery of these union pioneers paved the way for a more just and equitable Bermuda, and their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

“As we commemorate this significant milestone, the Bermuda Public Services Union stands in solidarity with our sister union, the Electricity Supply Trade Union, and all affiliates of the Bermuda Trade Union Congress in celebrating 60 years of progress, resilience, and unity.

“Let us honor the legacy of those who stood on the front lines for justice and continue to fight for the rights of workers across our Island.”
