FDM On PLP, Leadership, Policies & More

January 20, 2025 | 7 Comments

[Updated] “It’s time to call for honest, accountable leadership that prioritizes the needs and voices of Bermudian voters,” the Free Democratic Movement [FDM] said.

A FDM spokesperson said, “Zane DeSilva’s attachment to such a baseless and degrading article is as predictable as it is revealing. It’s no secret he’s David Burt’s loyal foot soldier—despite his aspirations to take his place as Premier. But let’s cut through the noise and address their hypocrisy head-on.

“He accuses the Free Democratic Movement [FDM] of being “out of touch.” On that, we agree—because we’re proud to be out of touch with the PLP. Why? Because 65% of Bermuda is not in touch with the PLP. The real problem is that his party is out of touch with the people it claims to represent.

“While the PLP dangles tax relief for workers like crumbs from the table, the FDM offers a real plan: tax relief for everyone—workers, seniors, and business owners alike. This approach cultivates inclusion and growth. But oddly, as a businessman, he does not seem to care about excessive taxation on business owners. Then again, he is not an ordinary businessman. While legitimate entrepreneurs take risks to create wealth, his strategy is clear: for every dollar he has to pay in taxes, he rakes in thousands through Government contracts. This redistribution of wealth isn’t about supporting the country; it’s about lining his pockets, specifically. Mr. DeSilva embodies the PLP’s warped view of business—not as a driver of innovation and prosperity, but as a mechanism to exploit Bermudian voters, treating us like cash cows to be milked dry.

“While he criticizes the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), the public hasn’t forgotten how Island Construction—the very company he owns—thrived under OBA/UBP leadership. In fact, the only vehicles dominating Government projects during the OBA’s time in office—and still dominating today—belong to Island Construction. His company thrives no matter who’s in power because Zane DeSilva has mastered the art of playing both sides. Half of his business principals back the PLP, and the other half back the OBA. This ensures he always wins. Meanwhile, in his desperate attempt to discredit the FDM, he accuses us of the very tactics he has perfected: prioritizing personal gain and power over Bermuda’s well-being.

“Let’s not forget The Honourable Marc Bean’s leadership was rejected by the PLP precisely because he demanded accountability and integrity. His call for “clean hands and pure hearts” struck fear into the soul of a party that thrives on backroom deals and cronyism. This standard is one the FDM continues to uphold—a standard the PLP fails to meet.

“The only threat to the PLP’s ignoble regime is a coordinated opposition. This is why they fear collaboration among opposition parties—it jeopardizes their grip on Bermuda’s dwindling resources. This is the PLP’s playbook: profit for the powerful, debt for the people.

“If they want to talk about the FDM’s silence, let’s address the real silence: the deafening inaction of 29 PLP MPs who sat mute in Parliament for five years. They collected taxpayer-funded salaries while enabling disastrous policies that have crippled our country.

“Finally, we encourage the public to visit www.fdmbda.com to explore our economic policy in full. It’s a comprehensive plan designed to restore prosperity and justice to Bermuda, in stark contrast to the financially illiterate policies of the PLP, which have left our country impoverished and disillusioned.

“To David Burt, Zane DeSilva, and the PLP’s PR spin doctors: remember, the FDM and The Honourable Marc Bean have all the receipts. Rest assured; we are not afraid to expose the truth. The politics of plunder and exploitation must end on February 18th.

“It’s time for Bermudians to demand more than childish and deceptive rhetoric. It’s time to call for honest, accountable leadership that prioritizes the needs and voices of Bermudian voters.”

Update 11.39pm: In response, a PLP spokesperson said, “The FDM’s statement is long on attacks but short on answers. While they are quick to throw stones, their own actions speak louder than their rambling words. They claim to stand for “clean hands and pure hearts,” but their eagerness to align with the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) tells a very different story. You can’t claim moral high ground while trying to climb into bed with a party whose record Bermudians have repeatedly rejected.

“The FDM’s talk of collaboration with the OBA is not about principles or progress—it’s about political opportunism and personal vendettas. Let’s not forget the OBA’s disastrous record: slashing funding for scholarships, refusing to increase pensions for seniors, trying to slash a woman’s access to mammograms, pepper spraying peaceful, innocent, elderly protestors, signing insane deals at the airport and at Morgan’s Point that cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and trying to force Pathways to Status down our throats.

“This is the same OBA that Bermudians held accountable at the polls for their failure to govern in the interests of the people. This is the same OBA that their former Chairman, Senator and candidate Justin Mathias describes as ‘…an unorganized trainwreck of an organization.’

“This is the same OBA that Marc Bean repeatedly referred to as ‘wicked.’ This is who the FDM wants to help put back in power. Let’s not be distracted by the FDM’s unhinged diatribes, conspiracy theories and their lackluster at best, non-existent at worst, candidates

“The truth is, the FDM has no meaningful plan for Bermuda. Their so-called “economic policy” is little more than buzzwords designed to sound good but falls apart under scrutiny. They claim to represent change but are leaning on the very tactics and alliances that Bermudians have seen—and rejected—before. Bermudians deserve honest leadership and real solutions, not empty rhetoric and backroom deals with the OBA based on personal vendettas.

“The Progressive Labour Party remains focused on building a fairer Bermuda for all of us—not just for the privileged few. The FDM can talk about “clean hands and pure hearts” all they want, but their willingness to collaborate with the OBA shows exactly who they are. Words are cheap. Actions, and alliances, reveal the truth.”

Sounds like the PLP are in their usual panic mode. Where are their success stories like affordable housing at Bermudiana Beach for expats, secret Acute Care Wing deal; untendered construction deals? Costs of construction can be addressed by putting cost controls on the monopolistic import of aggregate and cement, except of course a certain MP and beneficiaries would go ballistic.
How many more PLP MPs are leaving before the election?

    • LOL says:

Sounds like the UBPoba needs dissolve again and change the name. It will do you wonders to recruit those black members from the FDM. That will be a real chit show! LOL

    • Joe Bloggs says:

“Where are their success stories ”

The PLP has been in power for 21 of the last 26 years. The politics of hate works.

Do you not consider that a success story?

  2. Hey says:

    PLP are desperately spreading misinformation.

The OBA were elected following PLP distasterous year, when they looked into the bank accounts of the govenment, there was not even enough mony to pay the civil service payroll, let alone do anything else.

The fact that the OBA got the country back on its feet is an incredible achievement and the PLP benefited from the work of the OBA ,when they came back into power.

The airport was a good deal. Bermuda could not afford an airport. PLP plan to borrow 400million would have incurred more expense in terms of interest payments than any minimum revenue guarantee and when the airport was shut down or struggling following the extended deterrent to travel to Bermuda PLP policies for COVID we wouldn’t be paying a minimum revenue guarantee, we would be paying the whole cost of running an airport with no revenue or reduced revenue….. oh and we’d still be on the hook for the $400 million borrowed.

Morgans point swap was done under the PLP. The project could have been supported by the PLP (except people behind Caroline Bay weren’t foreigners like the Southampton Princess owners) but the PLP tried to do a land grab and triggered the guarantee. The PLP though they would get the whole of Morgans point, but the only part they got was the small area of Caroline Bay.

Nobody forced pathways to status, or it would have been in place. The PLP have announced they needed to get 8000 people into Bermuda in 5 years …they failed.

Am sick of the PLP lies. The country is in a mess, shame on you PLP.

  3. A litany of complaints says:

But not one of the experts above stand up and run and when they do, please untie your lacens. And is Joe Bloggs your mentor?

    • Ringmaster says:

I’ve told you before, changing your name 5 times while using the same computer makes you look like the idiot you are. One of the 5 names you use is pretending to be Joe Bloggs (not the real one) in case you forgot.

  4. Truth hits says:

Great stuff PLP, continue to stand. Msrc mess himself up with his bad actions.
