Grants Presented To Clubs And Organisations
Premier David Burt and the Cabinet presented $80,200 in grants to five community organisations to “support essential youth development programmes, facility upgrades, and community services.”
A Government spokesperson said, “Last Tuesday [Jan. 7], the Premier the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, joined by members of the Cabinet, presented five local community organisations with $80,200 in grants to support essential youth development programmes, facility upgrades, and community services. This initiative underscores the Government’s ongoing commitment to empowering community organisations and enhancing opportunities for Bermuda’s youth.
“The grants are awarded through the Confiscated Assets Fund [CAF], where seized funds are given back to worthy organisations doing good work in the community. They represent strategic investments in critical programmes and services that will promote positive youth engagement, support the vulnerable in our community, and improve infrastructure across community clubs and non-profit organisations. The following organisations received funding:
- Devonshire Colts FC: Awarded $12,500 to support their Youth Development Programme.
- Harrington Workmen’s Club & Cleveland County Cricket Club: Awarded $12,700 to assist in developing and improving Cricket Programmes.
- Project Action: Awarded $30,000 to provide free transportation services for the elderly, physically challenged, and dialysis patients.
- Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.: Awarded $12,500 to support the Children’s Reading Festival [CRF].
- Dandy Town Youth Academy [DTYA]: Awarded $12,500 for field rental, electricity for lights, and equipment.
“The Government’s support for local charities, community clubs, and youth programmes is rooted in recognising the essential role they play for Bermuda’s youth, in our culture, and our broader society. This Government has awarded over $1,000,000 in Capital Development Grants to 23 local community clubs. These funds have been instrumental in addressing critical facility upgrades, supporting job creation for local contractors and small businesses, and ensuring that clubs remain vibrant hubs of activity and community engagement.
“Since 2019, the Government has also awarded $634,935 from the Confiscated Assets Fund to 30 community organisations. This includes $554,735 awarded in previous allocations and $80,200 in last week’s presentations.
“In addition to financial grants, the Government has taken strategic measures to ease financial burdens on community clubs. Customs duties have been eliminated for sporting clubs and youth programmes, and duty on uniforms for international-level sports teams has been removed. These initiatives have enabled clubs to focus on improving facilities, purchasing essential equipment, and expanding their programmes.”
Premier Burt said, “Community organisations and sports clubs are the lifeblood of our society. They are more than just facilities – they are places where young people find mentorship, community members build relationships, and essential services are delivered to those in need. Building a fairer Bermuda means ensuring no one is left behind, and my Cabinet colleagues and I are proud to support these organisations and programmes that foster inclusion and empower young Bermudians.”
A General Election has been called. Nothing like using tax payer money to get votes. Why is this not illegal? Because it’s Bermuda.
Agree
If the Govt does not do it groups complain there is a lack of support. Who ever gets in should fix the roads, increase wages, give money yo community groups, cut crime, take down all drug dealers and 100 more things in Its first hour of being elected. The Govt needs to act like the people who write who need to demonstrate what they say. Easy to say when they are not in the seat.
Equally if not more shocking is the PLP keeps doing stuff like this and no one cares. People still vote for them and I cannot fathom why!
