Somersfield Academy Bermuda January 2025Somersfield Academy is marking a significant milestone in its educational journey—20 years of offering the International Baccalaureate [IB] programme to its students.

A spokesperson said, “As Bermuda’s only school to provide the IB Middle Years Programme [MYP], Somersfield continues to lead the way in shaping future-ready, globally minded learners.”

Head of School, Riki Teteina, reflected on the momentous occasion, stating, “For two decades, the IB programme has been integral to our mission of inspiring socially conscious, independent thinkers. We’re incredibly proud of the students who have thrived under this internationally recognised curriculum and the teachers who have made this journey possible.”

The spokesperson said, “As the only school on the island to offer the IB MYP, Somersfield Academy continues to provide a holistic learning experience that challenges students to think critically and act responsibly.”

Head of Secondary, Charlie Judd, shared, “The IB Middle Years Programme not only prepares our students academically but also equips them with essential life skills. By exploring real-world connections, we have students who are not only knowledgeable, but also inspired to make meaningful impacts in their local and global communities.”

Cathy Schlei, the IB Curriculum Coordinator, echoed the pride felt across the school community, stating, “The MYP allows us to engage students in meaningful ways, nurturing their curiosity and passion for learning. Its focus on diverse cultures and perspectives inspires creativity and helps students develop into informed, compassionate global citizens. Moreover, research shows that MYP students are better prepared for success in the IB Diploma Programme.”

The spokesperson said, “On January 6, Somersfield Academy launched the celebrations by hosting its first alumni speaker’s panel. The event was moderated by former teacher Jason Hammer and included Somersfield alumni, Ayetoro Hinds, Hana Bushara, Sion Symonds, Hannah Horsfield, Georgia Harris, and Maya Rajeh. The speakers provided alumni, current and past teachers, with their individual reflections on the lasting impact of Somersfield’s unique curriculum. The event took the viewers on a blast from the past and served as a reminder of the Somersfield’s culture grown out of trust, respect, and intellectual curiosity.

“On January 31 and February 2, MYP students will present Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Jr. The themes of Matilda reflect the core values of Somersfield Academy’s mission to inspire socially conscious, independent thinkers who are prepared to succeed with confidence, awareness, and compassion.

“On February 19, Somersfield will showcase their unique MYP programme with an Open House at 5:30pm, with the opportunity to experience the M5 Personal Project at 6:30pm. The M5 Personal Project is the culmination of the MYP education, where students undertake a self-directed project to explore a passion or interest. These initiatives highlight the holistic, inquiry-based approach that defines Somersfield’s IB programme.

“Somersfield Academy’s commitment to the IB’s values of intercultural understanding, inquiry-based learning, and personal development continues to shape the educational landscape of Bermuda. With 20 years of IB success behind them, the school is poised to inspire future generations of learners to lead with confidence and compassion.”
