Video: PLP Hold Press Conference

February 11, 2025 | 14 Comments

[Updated] The Progressive Labour Party [PLP] is holding a press conference this afternoon [Feb 11], and we will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below.

Update 7:44pm: Attorney General and Minister of Justice Kim Wilkerson said, “Good afternoon Bermuda,

“Today, I address a critical component of our Progressive Labour Party’s vision: strengthening free market competition through robust anti-monopoly legislation. Our goal is to create an economic environment where fairness prevails, innovation thrives, and all Bermudians benefit from a dynamic marketplace.

“Bermuda’s economic framework currently lacks specific antitrust regulations governing business combinations. This absence creates the potential for conditions that could stifle innovation and place undue financial burdens on our citizens.

“To rectify this, the PLP is committed to introducing comprehensive anti-monopoly legislation.

“This initiative aims to prevent market dominance by a few and promote a vibrant, competitive marketplace. Key components of our plan include:

  • “Establishing a Regulatory and Competition Authority: We will create an empowered body responsible for overseeing market practices, ensuring transparency, and enforcing fair competition standards.
  • “Implementing Clear Guidelines: Our legislation will define explicit criteria for mergers and acquisitions, preventing the formation of monopolies and promoting a diverse business landscape.
  • “Protecting Consumer Interests: By fostering competition, we aim to enhance product quality, encourage innovation, and ensure fair pricing, directly benefiting consumers. We will draw insights from successful antitrust frameworks worldwide, adapting them to Bermuda’s unique context. This approach ensures that our policies are both effective and tailored to our specific economic environment.

“In conclusion, our commitment to strengthening free market competition through anti-monopoly legislation is a testament to our dedication to economic fairness and prosperity for all Bermudians. By fostering a competitive marketplace, we pave the way for innovation, fair pricing, and a thriving economy that serves everyone.

“Your PLP team is committed to building a fairer Bermuda by easing the burden placed on you and saving you money. That’s why we need competition.

“Thank you”

Mischa Fubler said, “High utility costs are a significant concern for all of us. It affects our quality of life, the cost of
doing business and our ability to spend our hard earned money on our family and our priorities. .

“To address the high cost of utilities and enhance energy resiliency, the PLP plan includes:

  • “Amending section 35 of the Electricity Act to remove or limit categories of recoverable expenses that allow BELCO to pass certain costs onto consumers. This change will ensure fewer costs are recoverable, prioritising affordability for Bermudians.
  • “Further empowering the Regulatory Authority to implement fairer pricing on retail electricity tariffs.
  • “Owning our own electricity generation that is not dependent on global oil prices. We must develop community solar programs to expand access to renewable energy alternatives for Bermudians. This will help to drive technology progression and economies of scale in this industry. Which should result in more efficient, cost effective solar generation systems while also moving us towards the Integrated Resource Plan’s renewal energy mix goals.
  • “Reviewing and amending current legislation and regulations that require mandatory connection to BELCO, to allow more diverse and independent energy generation without risk to electrical grid stability.
  • “Reviewing the Retail Tariff and Feed-In-Tariff methodology to continue to protect consumers from the extreme variations in international oil pricing. Adjusting the approach to calculating consumption rates – how much BELCo charges you – and generation rates – how much BELCo pays you for your generation – will help to make them fairer for all Bermudians.

“At the end of the day, we understand that utility bills are painful. We will help to ease this burden while moving towards a greener Bermuda – by promoting leveraging the sun and perhaps as well in the future the wind and sea to generate the electricity we need. We must own our electricity in the long run so that the price of our electricity in Bermuda is not dictated by the global price of oil and gas.

By taking these steps, we are dedicated to easing the financial burden and environmental impact on Bermudian families.

“Thank you.”

  1. Dunn juice says:

Amazing they going to do all these things now. What about the last 20 years worth of lies. These are just new and improved lies. Then the burchess talking about rebuilding a bridge ya ok. He can’t even order a normal day ro day running asphalt plant. And don’t talk about bermudiana dump

  2. O good lord says:

    Do they hear themselves..

  3. Hey says:

The comedy show continues, 5 more days, what’s next? oh on Monday the PLP will be handing out free money.

  4. Ringmaster says:

With all these press conferences, videos and flyers promising so many “plans” and what the PLP will do which haven’t been done since 1998 would indicate their door to door canvassing is creating alarm about how they have failed their voters.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

What the PLP is doing now is consistent with what Vance Campbell said when he left the party

    • Question says:

They haven’t even showed up at my house this time. They don’t like the conversation, I imagine. Good, it saves me five minutes of wasted time listening to their inane childish lying bs.

  5. Mr. Apathy says:

Thank you to the media for pressing these folks to provide verbal confirmation that the PLP is dipping into the sinking fund to pay for pension increases and the other buzzword elements of their campaign designed to lock in the elderly vote.

It’s unsustainable at is only going to make our public debt more burdensome in the future, especially for today’s youth and future generations.

This is all just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

” the PLP is dipping into the sinking fund to pay for pension increases”

In other words, borrowing money to make pension payments.

  6. Hey says:

the PLP talk on solar is a joke. The finger can handle up to 13% of the grid at full capacity (so more when not everyone using electric like crazy), but our BELCO bills have increased.? Why ?

The finger was a huge scale project, so how are community solar projects going to help us.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

That solar farm at the airfield finger is tiny. I doubt if it can provide 13% of the air terminals needs on the sunniest of days. It is not feeding into the BELCO grid.

Do you have any idea how much power the terminal needs just to run the A/C?

      • hmmm says:

        It is 24,000 panels.

Direct from the Bermuda Government website “At maximum solar production, the facility will provide up to 13% of the Islands energy needs to meet peak demand”

Problem is that Belco bills have increased quite significantly (Doubled) , so this farm has had a negative impact on Bermudians.

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

Perhaps Mischa Fubler can explain how solar power works at night and cloudy days. Where does the power come from then?

Solar is not free and it is not cheap. There is much more to it than panels on the roof.

  8. Ringmaster says:

At least I have free healthcare apparently, or has the Government been hacked again? Two weeks and the premium has not been deducted as usual by direct debit.

  9. Islander says:

So, you’re telling me they could’ve done this all this time, but they chose not to???

The cost of living is nothing new. It has been increasing exponentially since Covid in 2020. Yet they haven’t done any of these things in the 3 years they had. Absolute clowns! I hope everyone sees them for the liars they are.
