Two persons aboard the sailing vessel “Relentless” were rescued by the container ship “CMA CGM URAL” south of Bermuda.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre [BMOC] spokesperson said, “US Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre Miami reports that the 53 foot ketch rigged sailing vessel Relentless on a voyage from Bermuda to the Bahamas with 2 persons onboard has been abandoned approximately 400 miles south of Bermuda after her autopilot failed and other technical difficulties arose with deteriorating weather conditions.

“Her crew activated the yacht’s Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon as a result. The Relentless had originally departed St. George’s, Bermuda on December 9th. RCC Miami diverted a nearby Maltese registered 96,704 GRT container ship the CMA CGM URAL which was on passage from Miami, FL bound for Singapore.

“The crew of the Relentless were able to safely transfer to the container ship and the ship’s master elected to divert to Bermuda as the closest port in order to disembark the two U.S. nationals who had been rescued. The CMA CGM URAL arrived offshore at the pilot station on Friday 15th December at 4pm whereupon the 2 crew were safely transferred to the pilot boat St. David before being landed ashore at Ordnance Island.”
