Government Statement On Municipal Elections

March 25, 2025 | 1 Comment

The Ministry of Housing and Municipalities said they “would like to clarify several points raised in the media regarding the 2025 Municipal Elections.”

A Government spokesperson said, “First and foremost, the Government has acted responsibly and transparently throughout this process. As noted in the March 21 tabling of the Municipalities Amendment Bill 2025 and as reflected in public reporting, the Government consulted both the Corporation of Hamilton and the Corporation of St. George in advance of the proposed legislation. The Mayor of Hamilton has publicly confirmed this consultation, describing it as ‘a foundational step towards fostering a collaborative and positive relationship’.

“The Ministry also wishes to underscore that the timing of the Privy Council’s decision is entirely outside the Government’s control. The matter was heard in December 2024, and like all judicial proceedings of this nature, it is subject to the court’s deliberative process. It would be premature and potentially disruptive to proceed with elections that may soon be impacted by a landmark ruling affecting the governance of Bermuda’s municipalities.

“While some may question the deferral of the 2025 elections, this decision is not an erosion of democracy but a measure of caution and foresight. The postponement allows for an orderly and informed path forward based on the final legal determination—rather than risking confusion or necessitating the reversal of newly elected administrations in the event of a significant structural change.

“It is also important to note that the Corporations have not objected to the delay, and no additional operational costs will be associated with the postponement. The Parliamentary Registrar remains prepared should an election be necessary but should not prematurely commit public resources while the legal uncertainty remains.

“Furthermore, the Municipalities Act 1923 provides for extraordinary or ‘by-elections’, which ensures that any vacancies in the Corporations that arise during the postponement period can be filled in a timely and democratic manner. The Government has taken care to maintain this safeguard to protect the Corporations’ continuity of service and ensure proper representation.

“The Ministry of Housing and Municipalities remains committed to engaging with stakeholders, maintaining the integrity of Bermuda’s democratic institutions, and ensuring that decisions are made in the best long-term interest of all residents and businesses within our municipalities.”

lol “responsible” and “transparent” are not words that are associated with this “government”. Always remember they didn’t get the most votes.
