Michael Fahy On Municipal Elections & More

March 11, 2025 | 5 Comments

Will the municipal elections be held in May 2025 or not, Shadow Minister Michael Fahy has asked, with the newly elected MP saying “clarity is required from the Bermuda Government on its intent.”

Mr Fahy said, “In May 2025 Municipal elections are due to be held in accordance with section 9 of the Municipalities Act 1923 [as amended] in both the City of Hamilton and the Town of St. George’s.

“The Act says ‘In 2023, and in every second calendar year thereafter, an ordinary municipal election shall be held for the election of the Mayor and eight Councillors of each Corporation.” This is to include “…a mayoral election, business ratepayers’ election and municipal residents’ election.”

“With that in mind, clarity is required from the Bermuda Government on its intent. Is the Government waiting for the outcome of the Privy Council judgment in the hopes that it is successful in wiping out the Corporations as we know them and replacing them with unelected Government appointees prior to May 2025? If a judgment does not come within the next few weeks, preparations will need to be made for municipal elections to fulfill the requirements under the Act.

“Voters, those desirous of standing for election and current elected officials deserve to know. Will elections be held in May 2025 or not, or will the elected Corporations be lost forever?

“To be clear, the OBA does not support the Government’s ultimate desire to take over the Corporations and hopes that the Privy Council judgment will go in the Corporations’ favour. In the event it does not, we hope that the Government will be brave enough to reverse its clear intent for ultimate control.”

  1. Observer says:

For the overall wellbeing of our island home, will the government please back off their desire to control the city of Hamilton. The city works well and has done for many years.

  2. Ringmaster says:

If the PLP do take over, and considering who the Minister is, expect the Corporations to rapidly decay and look as decrepit as the rest of Bermuda within days.

  3. Lion Paw says:

Or are you being pulled by the puppeteers. Is there a better future for you upon retirement? Stop with the innuendos and divisiveness too many Bermudians are homeless hungry and overlooked in corporate Bermuda.

What if they are? Will you then imply something else? What solutions do you have to offer struggling Bermudians? What are you doing to work with and stop opposing the Government?

Tired of the same rhetoric. Times are changing get with the programme

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

Excellent, the PLP will have Hamilton looking like some US rust belt town in no time at all. City Hall will look like Gibbs lighthouse. The streets will be an offroad course and the city will be in debt comparable to the PLP created national debt.

  5. Truth says:

It’s funny how closely the PLP resembles trumps republicans.
Racist, homophobic, xenophobic. Poor fiscal responsibility and a very poor understanding of economics.
Lots of arrogance and chest thumping though.
