U14 Team Finish Eighth In Dominican Republic
Bermuda’s Under-14 Boys’ Tennis team concluded their participation in the WJT [World Junior Tennis] North Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Tournament in the Dominican Republic, finishing eighth after a 3-0 defeat to Barbados on the final day.
This tournament marked the end of a demanding period for Bermuda’s young tennis players, following their 14th-place finish at the BJKCJ DCJ North/Central America & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Junior Davis Cup in Guatemala City.
In their final match against Barbados, the Bermuda team faced a tough challenge. Manuel Maldonado was the first to take to the court, facing Travis Licorish. Maldonado battled hard but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-1, giving Barbados a 1-0 lead.
Barbados then doubled their advantage when Zane Kirton defeated Raul Maldonado in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
The doubles match saw the Bermuda pair of Raul Maldonado and Trystan Thompson make a promising start, winning the first set 6-4. However, the Barbadian duo of Kirton and Cruz Thornton fought back strongly, winning the next two sets 6-0, 10-2, securing a 3-0 victory for Barbados.
