US & Bermuda Sign Shiprider Agreement
The United States and Bermuda took a “significant step forward in the fight against illicit maritime activity by signing a ‘Shiprider’ Agreement.”
A spokesperson said, “This critical cooperation reinforces the close U.S.-Bermuda security partnership by strengthening efforts to combat illegal migration, drug smuggling, and human trafficking, as well as illegal, unreported, and unregulated [IUU] fishing in Bermuda’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ].
“Negotiated by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Bermuda, the agreement allows Bermudian law enforcement officers to operate aboard U.S. Coast Guard [USCG] vessels, significantly improving enforcement against illicit activities and illegal fishing.
“The agreement strengthens intelligence sharing and maritime domain awareness, bolstering efforts to counter illicit activities such as illegal migration, narcotics trafficking and human smuggling.
“IUU fishing threatens fish stocks that are vital to both Bermuda’s marine ecosystem and the U.S. commercial fishing industry. By enhancing enforcement capabilities, the agreement helps to secure a sustainable future for the Western Atlantic’s fisheries, protecting jobs and economic stability in both countries. Increased cooperation ensures a more secure maritime environment, benefiting regional stability and economic resilience.”
“This agreement underscores our shared interests and advances our security partnerships,” said Acting Consul General Vukota. “Through this collaboration, we can swiftly address any threats that could impact our national security.”
Premier Burt emphasized Bermuda’s dedication to safeguarding its waters, stating, “This partnership with the United States represents an advancement in our ability to combat illegal fishing and uphold maritime security.”
The spokesperson said, “The agreement strengthens the longstanding U.S.-Bermuda partnership and demonstrates a continued commitment to regional maritime security.”

Excellent news it is high time we see mutual agreements that benefit all parties. Amazing
No PDF of any “Shiprider Agreement”, so this appears to be nothing more than a photo and soundbite opportunity.
Transparency is not a strong point for both parties.
