Video: Opposition Reply To Throne Speech
[Updated] “Our message is straightforward: we cannot continue to repeat the same mistakes and expect different outcomes,” Opposition Leader Jarion Richardson said as he delivered the One Bermuda Alliance’s [OBA] reply to the Throne Speech today [March 21].
Mr Richardson said, “Our role in the Opposition is to scrutinize and evaluate the Government’s plans and offer effective alternatives. We come not just to criticize, but to offer a clear path forward—one that leads Bermuda towards greater prosperity and fairness for all.”

Update 8.39pm: A PLP spokesperson said, “Today in Parliament, the One Bermuda Alliance delivered their response to the PLP Government’s Throne Speech. While their speech was heavy on criticism and light on details, we welcome the opportunity to work together on areas of shared concern to build a fairer Bermuda for all.
“We note that many of the initiatives the OBA highlighted as priorities — including infrastructure upgrades, housing development, crime reduction, scholarships, and technical training — are not new proposals but areas where the PLP has already delivered measurable progress.
“For example, 71 new affordable housing units have already been completed, 118 more are underway, and over $25 million has been invested in social and infrastructure projects — including roads, community upgrades, and schools.
“On vocational education, signature schools and increased apprenticeships have expanded access to trades training, while over $350,000 in scholarships was awarded this year alone.
“Additionally, our Red Tape Reduction initiatives have already delivered on reducing regulatory burdens and increased technology to make things easier for residents and businesses — with digital services now expanded and processing times reduced across multiple departments.
“On the cost of living, the OBA conveniently ignores the global factors driving inflation, instead choosing to mislead Bermudians for political gain. While they criticise the government, they fail to offer real solutions that would bring relief to families and businesses. Meanwhile, the PLP has delivered payroll tax cuts for 86% of Bermudians, frozen government health premiums for three consecutive years, and reduced energy taxes by 60%.
“Similarly, on healthcare, the OBA attacks the PLP’s progress on universal healthcare but does not present a clear alternative. Their response lacks cost projections or funding sources, leaving the impression that they are more interested in political attacks than constructive engagement. The PLP is already expanding healthcare access, investing in mental health services, and laying the groundwork for universal healthcare — with expanded HIP benefits and $3.8 million dedicated to mental health support.
“While we welcome their stated support for emergency shelters and transitional housing, their response lacks long-term solutions such as mental health services and employment programs to help people achieve stability. The PLP has already partnered with the HOME charity, invested in transitional housing, and expanded mental health services — because we know that housing solutions must include wraparound support.
“The OBA also continues to throw out vague accusations of corruption and inefficiency, yet their proposed governance measures — such as public reporting, financial responsibility, and anti-corruption policies — are largely symbolic. Many of these proposals already exist in law, with independent oversight from the Auditor General, Bermuda Police Service, Internal Audit, and regular public reporting — all under the PLP Government.
“Despite the OBA’s attacks, the PLP remains focused on delivering real solutions that improve the lives of Bermudians. We will continue to invest in our people, strengthen our economy, and build a Bermuda that works for all, not just a privileged few.”
