There were 20 incidents involving kites and BELCO’s overhead network during the Good Friday holiday, with one incident causing a large electricity outage in Hamilton Parish.

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today reported that there were 20 incidents involving kites and BELCO’s overhead network during the Good Friday holiday.

“One incident resulted in a large outage in Hamilton Parish affecting 821 customers, who lost power for just over an hour. BELCO was notified of the outage and on arrival, the overhead line crew found a member of public whose kite and line had become entangled in the overhead network.

“When attempting to free the kite, the individual pulled on the kite line forcing two high voltage conductors to come together, resulting in the circuit tripping and a loss of power to hundreds of customers. While the crew was freeing the first kite, a second kite then became entangled in the conductors, requiring the crew to remove both kites safely before restoring power to all customers.”

BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said, “We would like to remind the public that if a kite gets stuck in BELCO’s overhead network, never attempt to free the kite by pulling on the line. This can create serious safety hazards, including the risk of life-threatening injuries, and may cause power outages affecting hundreds of homes and businesses.

“Call BELCO on 955 and one of our trained crews will attend and safely remove the kite. Kite flying is a cherished tradition in Bermuda, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely.”

The spokesperson said, “Information about kite safety can be found on BELCO’s website.”
