Bermudians Compete In College Tennis Match
Bermudian tennis players Airez Gilbert-Simons and Alexcie Burrows competed against each other in a women’s collegiate tennis match between Johnson C. Smith University and Virginia State University. Gilbert-Simons, representing Johnson C. Smith, was part of the team that secured a 4-1 victory.
The competition commenced with doubles play. Gilbert-Simons and her partner, D. Manneni, defeated Virginia State’s Damita Bollers and Ashleigh Charles with a score of 6-2. The other doubles match, featuring Burrows and Ginger Johnson against a different Johnson C. Smith duo, was stopped with the score unresolved after Gilbert-Simons and Manneni’s win earned the doubles point for Johnson C. Smith.
In the singles matches, Gilbert-Simons continued her winning streak, overcoming Ashleigh Charles in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. While other singles matches were in progress, including Burrows’ match, Johnson C. Smith achieved the necessary wins to clinch the overall team victory at 4-1.
