Students To Take Part In Young Striders Walk

More than 150 middle-school students are set to participate in the Convex Middle-to-End on Saturday [May 3] thanks to the launch of the inaugural Butterfield Young Striders Initiative.
Butterfield, a platinum sponsor of the popular annual event for the past six years, has provided 50 entries each to Whitney Institute, Dellwood, and Sandys Secondary.
Northlands Primary will also be represented, entering a team of around ten cyclists; meanwhile, Sandys have requested an additional entry to bring their total to 51.
Andrew Masters, a spokesperson for Butterfield, said the initiative was created to give more youngsters the opportunity to take part in the event in an official capacity. The walk begins at Point Pleasant Park at 10am.
“We were looking to switch things up a little this year,” Mr Masters told Bernews.
“Over the years we’ve noticed the amount of young people who are walking on the day but not officially participating.
“We wanted to create an avenue for them by encouraging schoolteachers and principals to rally a team together and not worry about the entry fee being a roadblock.”
Highlighting the benefits of the initiative, Mr Masters said: “It’s one of the best community events of the year and promotes healthy activity with the various ways people can get involved.
“We believe in encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle early in life.
“Of course, you also have the community engagement side of things, not to mention the money raised for the local charities.
“I don’t see a world where we don’t do this [the Butterfield Young Striders Initiative] again.
“We look forward to awaiting the Young Striders at our water stop at Whale Bay with our generous volunteers and mascot Vern.”
This year’s event supports five local charities: Age Concern [ACB Hardship Programme], Bermuda Audubon Society [Conservation Management Plan for High Point], Bermuda Red Cross [Equipment Rental Revitalisation Programme], the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Bermuda and The Reading Clinic [Core Reading Programme].
