Warwick Academy’s secondary students celebrated International Day earlier this week, an annual event organised by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages to “honour and embrace the school’s rich cultural diversity. ”
A spokesperson said, “The day is filled with vibrant energy, meaningful learning, and a strong sense of community.
“Students arrived dressed in national colours, cultural attire, international sports jerseys, or clothing that reflects their personal heritage. It’s a $3 grub day, with all proceeds being donated to both a local and an international charity—a small gesture with a big global impact. Many students have chosen to give even more generously.
“The day began with a special secondary assembly centred on global themes and values, featuring music, student reflections, and performances. Warwick Academy was honoured to welcome His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Andrew Murdoch, who attended the assembly and shared in the spirit of internationalism being celebrated throughout the day.
“During recess, students enjoyed a colourful and flavourful international food tasting, where they sampled dishes from around the world, generously prepared and donated by parents. This experience not only brought joy but also allowed students to explore global cultures through cuisine.
“The celebration continued with a special presentation at 11:00am, where a group of students, led by staff member Abena Okanta-Ofori, made a donation to British Airways representative Mrs. Marianne Wilcox. The donation—a large collection of international coins collected by students over the years—will support Flying Start, British Airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief. This initiative helps disadvantaged young people through projects in the UK, India, Ghana, and South Africa.”
“We’re incredibly grateful to the students and staff for their generous donation to Flying Start,” said Mrs. Wilcox. “It’s inspiring to see young people in Bermuda coming together to support children and young people in need, both locally and around the world. On behalf of British Airways, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you for their kindness and community spirit. Personally, I am especially proud as a former student of Warwick Academy.”
The spokesperson said, “Students are participating in a wide range of interactive cultural workshops designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate global traditions. These include:
- Human Rights & DEIB [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging]
- Fun with Flags
- Learn About Henna
- International Film Screenings
- Gombey Experience
- Steel Pan Workshop
- Spanish Tapas Tasting
- World Music Exploration
- Scottish Dancing, Salsa, Art, Cooking, and more
“From rhythm and dance to food, film, music, and meaningful conversations about equity and identity, these sessions offer something for everyone—enriching students’ understanding of the world through hands-on engagement and cultural appreciation.
“International Day continues to be a much-loved tradition at Warwick Academy, celebrating not only the diverse backgrounds of its students and staff, but also encouraging curiosity, empathy, and a strong sense of global citizenship.”

What a shame Crystal Caesar, Minister of Education, didn’t visit to see how a school can be run successfully with a multi cultural student population. But then again, the PLP has always been one dimensional with little interest in diversity. Well done Warwick Academy for continuing to be a leading light in progressive education.
