“The Ministry of Economy and Labour proudly joins the workers of Bermuda in celebrating International Workers’ Day, a day to honour the achievements, contributions, and sacrifices of workers across our island and around the world,” Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward said.

Minister Hayward said, “Today, the Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to collective bargaining and workers’ rights.

“As a Labour Government, we remain steadfast in our mission to protect workers’ rights, increase union membership, and promote collective bargaining. These are the pillars of a fair and equitable society. We recognise that strong, independent trade unions and effective collective bargaining are essential to building just economies, advancing social justice and fostering inclusive growth.

“The International Labour Organization [ILO] has consistently highlighted the importance of collective bargaining. Its Global Wage Report notes that, “Collective bargaining is an essential tool for reducing inequality and building cohesive societies.” Furthermore, the ILO’s Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization highlights that, “The promotion of collective bargaining is a key instrument to achieving decent work and sustainable development.”

A Government spokesperson added, “As a labour Government, we will continue standing shoulder to shoulder with Bermuda’s unions and workers as we navigate the evolving world of work. Collective bargaining is not just a right—it is essential to achieving fairness, stability, and shared prosperity. As we celebrate the victories of the labour movement, we must also renew our commitment to further progress.

“To this end, the Ministry is pleased to announce a new initiative in partnership with the Bermuda Trade Union Congress [BTUC] entitled The Collective Bargaining Awareness Campaign. The principle aims of the campaign will be to:

  • Promote greater understanding of the benefits of collective bargaining: and
  • Clearly highlight workers’ legal rights to organise.

“This campaign will include public education forums and a national media campaign highlighting the critical role of unions in building Bermuda’s future.

“We are proud to stand alongside the BTUC to ensure that all workers have the tools, protections, and voice they deserve. Together, we are building a more resilient and inclusive Bermuda.”

The PLP Government has stated its position, “As a labour Government, we will continue standing shoulder to shoulder with Bermuda’s unions and workers as we navigate the evolving world of work … it is essential to achieving fairness, stability, and shared prosperity”

Shared prosperity without the Unions or their members taking any financial risk is the stated goal of the PLP Government.

As long as we have a weak pathetic oba/ubp opposition the PLP will always be in charge.
