BZS & BAMZ World Ocean Day Event On June 7
The Bermuda Zoological Society and BAMZ invite the community to a World Ocean Open Day on Saturday, June 7, celebrating Bermuda’s marine life with interactive activities, talks, and ocean adventures.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] and Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo [BAMZ], are proud to host a free World Ocean Open Day on Saturday, 7 June from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at BAMZ.
“This event will be a fun-filled celebration of our island’s greatest treasure: the ocean! The day’s events are designed to bring together ocean lovers of all ages for interactive, educational and exciting activities that will spark curiosity and deepen understanding of Bermuda’s marine ecosystems. There will be immersive activities, engaging presentations, and family-friendly fun that will aim to show how everyone can play a role in protecting our blue backyard.
“Bring your bathing suit and towel and plan to make a splash with a variety of water-based activities.
“Some of the fun activities will include:
- Explore Scuba Diving with certified Dive Instructor Sam Bennett of Eco Dive Bermuda. Participants will get to try Scuba diving in our seal pool [without the seals!]
- Snorkel Adventures in Harrington Sound with the BZS Ocean Education team
- Boat rides to explore Harrington Sound aboard Callista
- Ocean Science Corner Lionfish Awareness & Hunting Demonstrations hosted by the BZS Science Club assisted by our BZS Junior Volunteer and members of the Lionfish Taskforce
- Free Mini Ocean Talks. These will be 30-minute mini talks to gain a deeper understanding about marine science, the species that are found in the ocean, and actionable ways we can help protect our ocean.
“Guest speakers will include:
- Dr Gaelle Roth of the Bermuda Turtle Project
- Dr. Mark Guishard and Dr. Tim Noyes from BIOS-ASU
- Choy Aming, BAMZ Senior Aquarist and the Bermuda Shark Project
- Andrew Stevenson whale researcher from Whales Bermuda
- Erich Hetzel from Beyond Plastic
- Fae Sapsford from the Sargasso Sea Project
- Dr. Miguel Mejias, ornithologist, conservationist and naturalist
- Dr. Geoff Smith, Director of Environment & Natural Resources
- Dr Robbie Smith, Curator of the Natural History Museum at BAMZ
“The celebration wouldn’t be complete without animal interactions, animal feedings and mer-people sightings throughout the day. And to round out the fun, there will be a bouncy castle and face painting. The Gift Shop will also be offering 15% off all purchases [excluding food and drinks] with all proceeds to support the BZS Education and Conservation Programmes. There will be food and drink to purchase at The Beastro, plus vendors will be on-site, including Ashley’s Lemonade, Duch Pops and J&B Woodfired Pizza.
“Plus, make sure to bring a reusable bottle to fill up at our hydration station, which has been kindly sponsored by Pure Water.
“This event is a key part of the BZS and BAMZ shared mission to inspire appreciation and care for island environments, and to connect the community to the natural world around them. By offering educational and engaging ocean-based experiences, we are encouraging long-term conservation attitudes and behaviors.
“BZS continues to reach thousands of young people every year through our education and conservation programmes – whether it’s on Trunk Island, our Living Classroom; aboard MV Endurance, our “floating classroom”; or through immersive learning experiences at the BAMZ facility.”
