Darren Glasford Retires After 38 Years
After 38 years of service, Chief Inspector Darren “Shakee” Glasford has retired from the Bermuda Police Service.
A spokesperson said, “After 38 years of committed service to Bermuda, Darren “Shakee” Glasford, has officially retired as Chief Inspector with the Bermuda Police Service. On Friday, July 18th, colleagues and family gathered to wish CI Glasford a heartfelt farewell. The outpouring of support and admiration was a testament to the legacy he leaves behind and saw the briefing filled to standing room only.
“During the ceremony, colleagues used words such as dedicated, trailblazer, leader, mentor and brother to not only describe Mr. Glasford, but also reflect the deep respect he earned throughout his distinguished career.
“CI Glasford candidly shared that policing wasn’t his original career plan. He initially aspired to become an architect. However, a pamphlet from his father about the Police Cadet Programme, and his own love for bikes and speed, led him to “give it a try.” Once he realized he could get paid to do the things he loved, the rest was history.
“Known for his sense of humour, CI Glasford recounted that in his early days in the Traffic Division, during a high-speed chase whicht ended in the suspect’s arrest, he received an urgent call for assistance from an officer at another location.
“Not wanting to leave his colleague vulnerable, he flagged down a taxi, placed the detained suspect in the cab, and instructed the driver to take the individual to Hamilton Police Station. Upon arrival, when asked by another officer what the fare was, the taxi driver replied, “No charge. This one’s on the house.”
“That moment, like so many others, demonstrates the unique camaraderie, resourcefulness, and trust that defined CI Glasford’s tenure.”
Reflecting on his career, CI Glasford beamed, “If I had to do it all over again, I would do it exactly the same.”
The spokesperson said, “CI Glasford won’t be gone for long, though. He plans to return to the Bermuda Police Service in a new capacity as a training officer, where he will continue to share his knowledge and shape the next generation of officers.
“The Bermuda Police Service, extend our deepest gratitude to Chief Inspector Darren “Shakee” Glasford for his 38 years of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people of Bermuda. Enjoy your well-earned break, Shakee.”
