Community Dialogue On Reparations
In the lead-up to the 191st Anniversary of Emancipation on Friday, August 1st, a series of community-focused events—including a dialogue on reparations and artistic reflections—aim to deepen public understanding of the occasion’s historical and personal significance.
A spokesperson said, “As we approach Friday, August 1st, the 191st Anniversary of Emancipation – there are a variety of offerings to remind us of the “reason for the season.”
“There will be a Community Dialogue; including Kim Wilkerson, Wendell Hollis, Lew Simmons and Glenn Fubler on Tuesday, July 29th from 6.30 – 8 pm at the Cathedral Hall [Church St.] focused on the topic of Reparations. The dialogue will examine both legal and moral perspectives of Reparations and of course those involved – notably the Attorney General – will be addressing the matter, strictly through a personal lens.
“The community is invited to leverage this ‘learning opportunity’ by reviewing a 12 mins video on Reparations produce by CARICOM.
“Also, in leading up to Emancipation, we have invited Milton Raposo & Mischa Fubler – both active with Chewstick Foundation – to share a short phone video of them reflecting on the popular lyrics of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song. The specific reference involves the Global icon leveraging Garvey’s insights; reminding us to Emancipate Yourself from Mental Slavery…none but ourselves can free Our own Minds…
“These initiatives are geared to encourage all sectors of our community to reflect on the significance of this Mid-Summer Milestone with the view to enhancing the best of ourselves both personally and collectively.”
