The Bermuda Equal Justice Initiative [BEJI] announced that its Founder and Executive Director, Eron Hill, has been appointed to the Treatment of Offenders Board.

A spokesperson said, “Mr. Hill’s appointment made by the Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Senator Kim Wilkerson JP reflects a timely alignment between the Government’s commitment to meaningful justice reform and some of BEJI’ core beliefs, to promote fairness, protect the dignity of all persons that pass through our criminal justice system and ensure that justice in Bermuda is not only punitive but also restorative and redemptive.

“The Treatment of Offenders Board, established under the Treatment of Offenders Act 1979, is a statutory body charged with safeguarding the treatment and rights of incarcerated persons in Bermuda. Mr. Hill’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, as Bermuda continues its national conversation about prison reform, restorative justice, and rehabilitation.

“Mr. Hill’s appointment is a reflection of growing recognition that justice is multidimensional. The Treatment of Offenders Board plays a vital role in balancing the need for order and discipline with the human right to humane treatment and fair process within correctional settings.

“Mr. Hill brings to the role a track record as a tenacious advocate for justice reform, a steadfast commitment to equal justice under law, and a belief that how as a society, we treat the most marginalized among us speaks to the health of our democracy. As Executive Director of BEJI, Mr. Hill has spearheaded public education campaigns, legal interventions, and community-based advocacy to advance fair treatment for all, particularly the disfavored and forgotten.”

‘I am humbled and very grateful to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for appointing me to serve on the TOOB. This appointment is both a solemn responsibility and sincere privilege. I look forward to working with all members of the Board under the direction and guidance of our Chairwoman, Mrs. Komeiko Roberts. Together, I’m confident that we will ensure that justice holds space for both accountability and redemption.’ said Mr. Hill.

A spokesperson added, “The marathon for equal justice for all in Bermuda continues.”
