Bermuda Team Places Third In UK World Cup
A team of Bermudian footballers living in England finished third in the Inner City World Cup tournament in Victoria Park, Leicester, at the weekend.
The Bermuda Gombey Warriors were coached by former Bermuda national team and Dandy Town defender Dennis Zuill, who moved to the West Midlands several years ago, while Keavin Caines managed the side.
Among the players were Tahje Smith, Dennis Zuill Jr, Daehierry Zuill, Aaron Crockwell, Dominique Lambert, Damien Butterfield, Nakejae Caines, Nijere Ming, Kairo Frost and Xanai Douglas.
First staged in 2019, the multi-cultural nine-a-side tournament celebrates diversity and promoting community integration.
Reflecting on the competition, Zuill, who coached Dunlop First to the Peter Bromwich Premier Division title in the Coventry Alliance last season, told Bernews: “We came up against teams from Gambia, Nigeria, Somalia – African and Middle Eastern nations.
“We were the smallest nation there and made the most noise!
“It was a great experience for our players. Bermudians are doing a lot of positive things out here in the UK.”
