Petition To Stop Development Of Southlands

August 21, 2025 | 0 Comments

An online petition has been launched calling for a halt to the development of Southlands National Park, with supporters urging the Government to protect the area’s natural heritage and preserve it for future generations.

The petition says, “Southlands National Park Reserve—affectionately known as “The Green Lung of Bermuda”—is a sanctuary of biodiversity and natural beauty, offering refuge to Bermuda’s wildlife and a tranquil escape for both residents and visitors. Yet, recent and proposed developments along the southern coast and northern woodlands of this cherished reserve are threatening its very essence.

“The ongoing expansion has already led to significant habitat loss, endangering native and endemic species that rely on this ecosystem to survive. It has also introduced safety risks for beachgoers, woodland cyclists, and hikers who frequent the area. If development continues, it will further degrade nesting grounds for Longtails, accelerate coastal erosion, and destabilize cliffs already known for their dangerous undercuts.

“Southlands means a great deal to many Bermudians. For some it is a refuge and a physical representation of the island’s natural beauty, for others it is a safe space and source of family friendly fun. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, Southlands is a core part of the island.

“Bermuda is one of the most densely developed islands in the Atlantic. Our remaining green spaces are vanishing—one project at a time. Southlands is not just another patch of land; it is a living, breathing part of our heritage and environmental future. To lose it would be to lose a vital part of Bermuda’s identity.

“We urge the Bermuda Government to immediately halt all development within Southlands National Park Reserve. Protecting this space is not only an environmental imperative—it is a moral responsibility to future generations. Let us stand together to preserve what remains of Bermuda’s natural legacy.”
